The RIIC at the University of Montana is looking for a Knowledge Translation Coordinator to join our team. Knowledge translation (KT) refers to strategies that move research into practice by improving the relevance, reporting, accessibility, interpretation, and application of research results. The KT Coordinator position reports to the Director of KT, and will work primarily within the Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities (RTC:Rural).

The Knowledge Translation Coordinator will create products for outreach, dissemination, and events that communicate RTC:Rural’s research projects, collaborations, and innovations to a variety of audiences, including research/academic, policy makers, disability stakeholders, and the general public. Products include print and digital materials. The position requires someone with strong technical and translational writing skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team to meet goals and deadlines.

Position Details

  • Position is a full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $45,000 to $50,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Experience, Skills, and Education

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in research communication.
  • Experience developing plans and strategies, outreach at events, product creation, and dissemination.
  • Experience creating print and digital materials in various formats for multiple audiences.
  • Excellent command of the English language, and exceptional speech and writing communication skills.
  • Ability to translate research data into plain language.
  • Ability to work independently and make manager level decisions that influence the work of other team members
  • Experience with staff or student supervision
  • Experience and confidence in editing, proofreading and/or providing review and critique on the written work of both junior and senior staff members.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and proven ability to learn new software.
  • Demonstrated project coordination/management.
  • Undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, economics, rehabilitation counseling, public health, or other field that prepares individuals to conduct analytic and intervention research.

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Education

  • Experience and knowledge in creating accessible digital and print materials to support all seekers and users of knowledge and information.
  • Understanding of scientific and research processes, including ethics, funding, and peer-reviewed publication best practices.
  • Experience with the Adobe Design products (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with disability-focused government agency personnel, researchers, community organizations and individuals with disabilities and/or lived disability experience.
  • Grant-writing experience.
  • Master’s degree in psychology, sociology, economics, rehabilitation counseling, public health, or other field that prepares individuals to conduct analytic and intervention research.

The University of Montana (UM) is unit within the Montana University System with more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 500+ full-time faculty members. UM is located in Missoula, a culturally vibrant community of about 75,000. The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (RIIC) is a unit within UM dedicated to disability focused service, education, and research. RIIC is home to multiple federal, state, and foundation grants and contracts.

The Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities (RTC:Rural) is an anchor program within the RIIC, that has received 30 years of continual grant funding to address the needs of people with disabilities in rural communities. Our disability research focuses on rural America because we understand the needs and opportunities of people living in rural communities are unique. We partner with a variety of rural and/or disability stakeholders to conduct our work because we know that the knowledge and experience of others strengthens our research and knowledge-sharing work.
