Summary

The Assistant Provost for Academic Advising and Student Success will provide strategic
leadership and management focused on improving undergraduate academic advising
and overseeing academic policies and processes to enhance student success from
enrollment to graduation. This position will provide administration of day-to-day
operations and oversee the advising process, manage a reduced caseload for advising
students, participate in registration and other enrollment management activities, provide
advisor training and development, conduct ongoing assessment efforts, and develop and
execute systems and programs for students related to academic advising. This position
will work with the Associate Provost of Academic Affairs, the Vice President of Student
Experience, Executive Director of Health & Wellness, Registrar, and International
Student Services among others to identify and implement innovative models and
programs, develop policies and offer support to advisors and departments. Critical to this
role is the partnership with the Office of Student Experience and faculty mentors,
program directors, and school deans.

Essential Job Functions

Principle duties include, but are not limited to:
● Supervise two academic advisors and provide on-going resources, support and
training to the advising team in the areas of developmental advising and student
success.
● Serve as an advisor for students with complex advising needs.
● Manage the process of advising, managing application review, and developing
with the programs curriculum plans for double major (InterSchool) students.
● Advise and approve students for unit overloading based on institutional policies
and procedures.
● Provide an equity and inclusion approach to academic advising in working with
diverse and historically underserved student populations.
● Provide leadership and guidance for academic advising initiatives including
proactive advising for first and second-year undergraduates.
● Coordinate and strengthen advising communications and campaigns.
● Provide day-to-day project leadership for the EAB Navigate student success
system, including engaging key stakeholder groups on campus and training for
the multi-stage campus implementation.
● Work with the Office of Student Experience to plan and facilitate advising sessions
for New Student Orientation for both first-time and transfer students.
● Communicate and build relationships with faculty mentors, program directors,
assistant/associate deans, and school deans to facilitate student success and
promote advising services and programs.
● Update and maintain necessary online resources such as the academic advising
web pages.

● Maintain a connection to state, regional and national advising professionals and
accessing their resources and professional development opportunities.
● Participate on the CARE Team and Persistence & Graduation Committee.
● Other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Skills/Abilities

We are looking for candidates with a strong track record of academic advising and
student success experience working with a diverse student population and who have
developed effective strategies that serve historically underserved students as well as first
and second-year students, transfer students, high unit seniors, and students on
probation.
● A passion for working with students and knowledge of research and best practices
in academic advising and student success.
● Comprehensive knowledge or ability and eagerness to learn and understand the
principles, practices, and procedures of institutional policies.
● Sound knowledge of student development theory and needs of students from low-
income, diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
● Strong academic advising skills.
● Ability to work with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty.
● Ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as independently.
● Ability to lead, organize, plan, implement and evaluate services, initiatives and
programs aligned with academic advising and student success.
● Ability to accommodate multiple demands for commitment of time, energy and
resources; work quickly under pressure; adapt to changing priorities, situations
and demands; and integrate change.
● Ability to use data to inform practices, interventions, and strategies to increase
student success.

Required Qualifications

● Master’s degree required from an accredited institution preferably in relevant
fields such as student personnel administration, student development theory,
higher education administration.
● Several years of progressively responsible experience, demonstrating advising,
counseling, and /or related higher education experience.
● Demonstrated success in educating and training faculty and staff regarding
academic and/or student progress policies and requirements.
● Experience supervising professional staff.
● Experience in an art and design higher education setting is preferred.
● Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a
highly collaborative environment.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills for interacting with faculty, staff,
and students.
● Experience as an academic advisor and leading an academic advising unit/team.
● Experience with EAB Navigate or similar advising management tools preferred.
Experience with Ellucian Colleague preferred.
● Experience creating successful partnerships with Student Affairs, Registrar, and
other student service units.
