Job Summary:

The Senior Director provides administrative leadership for the Department of Housing Operation and Residence Life. Serves as budget manager and has fiscal and operational responsibility for the Department of Housing Operation and Residence Life. The employee administers and directs all activities associated with the operation of Jacksonville State University’s Department of Housing Operation and Residence Life. Encourages and supports opportunities for staff development at all levels of the department’s organization. Investigates and responds to concerns of students, parents, university staff members, and others in such a manner as to provide accurate information, good customer service, and to foster good public relations. Work is reviewed for compliance to university policy and for accomplishment of goals and objectives.

Essential Functions:

·         Manages the development and implementation of the Department of Housing Operations and Residence Life’s unit goals, objectives, policies, and establishes appropriate service and staffing levels; allocates resources accordingly.

·         Evaluates and assesses staffing needs on a timely basis and recommends changes to the Vice President for Student Affairs, as appropriate, to respond to needs and changes in the operating environment. 

·         Supervises administrative, professional, and staff members, as well as graduate and student workers, which will include training, evaluating, providing feedback on performance, and taking corrective action as necessary.

·         Ensures departmental compliance with existing university and state fiscal and personnel policies and procedures. 

·         Responsible for the overall operation of eight residence halls, seven apartment facilities, and the university’s guest suites. 

·         Encourages and communicates the expectation that programs and activities of an educational, recreational, cultural, and social nature be provided for all students. Ensures that programming is balanced with regard to meeting interests and developmental needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Ensures that students are involved in the development and implementation of programming. Identifies academic and extracurricular interests of students by formal and informal contacts and methods. 

·         Ensures that adequate feedback mechanisms are developed, and opportunities provided for residents to evaluate all aspects of university housing operations (i.e., policy, facilities, staff, and services) on a timely basis. 

·         Monitors current trends in student housing to determine potential application or impact to the department. 

·         Coordinates marketing strategies for the Department of Housing Operations and Residence Life.

·         Monitors housing application and assignment data to determine accuracy of projected occupancy of university housing and residence life facilities for specified periods of time. 

·         Coordinates preparation of the annual operating budget and recommends housing rental rates needed to meet budgetary needs to the Vice President for Student Affairs. 

·         As budget manager, reviews operating budget to compare revenue and expense data with budgeted amounts. Develops, analyzes, and manages budgeted resources to accomplish program, facilities, and personnel objectives; make adjustments for seasonal or emergency needs as appropriate. 

·         Works in close collaboration with other university departments in the planning and implementation of all summer camp programs and activities to ensure a high level of utilization of campus facilities/services throughout the year. 

·         Works in close collaboration with the university’s Physical Plant to establish facility repairs and replacement criteria, scopes of work, frequencies, schedules, and funding requirements. Coordinate the development of both short-range and long-range plans for maintaining university facilities and ensure all residential facilities are in proper repair and cleanliness.

·         Represents the university with appropriate regional and national professional organizations. 

·         Serves on university-appointed committees as assigned. 

·         Ensures that all departmental policies and procedures are consistent with university financial policies.

·         Serves as the chief community standards appeals officer. 

·        Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

·         Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Business Administration, or related field required.

·         at least five (5) years' experience in the central office function of administration and management of a student affairs program required.

·         Valid driver’s license required.
