Department Summary
The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is a research institute that reports to the Vice President for Research and Innovation. We have 18 labs and approximately 150 employees, including 45 graduate students who train in our labs. We have an administrative structure, which includes accounting, purchasing, personnel, PI support, building management, and three service centers. Our annual budget is about $9.5 million, primarily from federal research and training grants.

Position Summary
The Lab Manager/Research Assistant will be responsible for conducting original research in the Spero laboratory related to antibiotic tolerance and novel drug development in pathogenic bacteria, as well as performing basic lab managerial activities that include placing and receiving orders, maintaining lab organization, and managing lab safety compliance. The Lab Manager/Research Assistant will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments using molecular biology, genetics, and microbiological techniques working with bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. They will work closely with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians, and undergraduates conducting research on associated aspects of the project in the Spero lab.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field
  • One year experience in a research laboratory in a non-classroom setting

  • Expertise in molecular biology

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior microbiology research experience, such as competency with culturing/handling bacteria and aseptic technique
  • Prior experience managing a laboratory, such as placing/receiving orders, establishing and maintaining lab organization and safety compliance
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills
