Job Summary:

The Senior Associate Director for Teaching and Learning oversees the design and delivery of programming and services focused on promoting excellence in teaching. The Senior Associate Director collaborates closely with the Executive Director to design, facilitate, and evaluate evidence-based professional development programs and services on excellence in teaching and learning for undergraduate and graduate faculty across disciplines, following the guiding principles of the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) and grounded in learning science and equitable and inclusive teaching practices. Responsibilities include program planning and evaluation, facilitating evidence-based programs, building strong relationships across the University, collaborating with colleagues to coordinate event planning logistics, and staying up-to-date on pedagogical and faculty development research. Programs will include in-person, blended, and online options. This is a campus-based position that is eligible for partial remote work.

Responsibilities:

Oversee Programs and Services
  • Oversee programs and services related to teaching excellence, in partnership with the Executive Director and aligned with the guiding principles of CFE. Programs should balance existing programs and new offerings, be evidence-based, and grounded in equitable and inclusive teaching principles;
  • Manage annual planning in partnership with the Director;
  • Design and facilitate programs, including creating and implementing an evaluation system, managing resources, and overseeing program-planning logistics;
  • Build strong relationships with faculty and administrative leadership across the University;
  • Collaborate with the CFE Faculty Fellow for Excellence in Teaching.


Design and Deliver Programs and Services
  • Design and deliver programs and services related to excellence in teaching as included in the annual plan or as assigned by the Executive Director, which includes multiple teaching formats, such as lecture-style presentations, seminar-style facilitated discussions, and/or workshops modeling best practices;
  • Work with internal and external partners in workshop design and delivery, base workshops in best practices and research in the field, and manage logistics of workshop design;
  • Collaborate with Projects and Events Coordinator on marketing and delivery logistics;
  • Design and lead a wide range of programs and quickly develop expertise on topics related to college teaching. Current programs under the Senior Associate Director's purview include the Lunchtime Dialogue series, STAR Scholars, the Adult Learners seminar series for CompleteDegree, Teaching Consultations and confidential Teaching Observations/SGIDs, the Keynote on Excellence in Teaching, and a new Course Design Institute to be offered in January 2022;
  • Collaborate with other CFE staff on the Summer Teaching Institute in partnership with Harvard Medical School.


Other Responsibilities:
  • Continuously develop and maintain expertise related to teaching and learning and faculty development, including attending professional development, keeping up-to-date on the literature, engaging in environmental scanning, and actively participating in the faculty development field;
  • As needed, seek out resources that directly support areas of responsibility and upcoming initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned, including conducting research on teaching, support for special projects or programs, serving on committees, and administrative support when needed.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Education or a related field, or a PhD in another discipline plus significant knowledge of, and experience in college pedagogy, learning theory, and/or faculty development;
  • 5+ years' relevant experience in faculty development and/or supporting teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
  • Extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
  • Strong understanding of best practices in college teaching and/or faculty development;
  • Previous experience designing college courses or designing and facilitating professional development workshops, seminars, and presentations;
  • Demonstrated expertise in pedagogy, learning theory, or learning science, including knowledge of equitable and inclusive teaching principles;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Adaptability and willingness/ability to learn and apply new skills and areas of expertise quickly;
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and prioritization skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal;
  • Proven ability to successfully work with individuals across a broad spectrum of professional, social and personal identities;
  • Ability to travel to conferences as needed;
  • Ability to incorporate and a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in faculty development in a full-time capacity, minimally at the Associate Director level, is strongly preferred;
  • Experience with the Microsoft office suite;
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
