Marketing and Communications Writer

We are seeking aMarketing and Communications Writer. This highly motivated, creative, and productive individual will provide editorial support for a variety of strategic marketing and communications projects with the goal of enhancing the brand of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. This position will report to Content and Creative Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research, write, edit, and copyedit content for communications and marketing collateral, including but not limited to brochures, newsletters, websites, blog posts, articles, advertisements, press releases, media pitches, and emails.
  • Assist in the development of innovative communications strategies and tactics that enhance CTY’s reputation and help it to achieve programmatic goals.
  • Coordinate and conduct interviews with students, instructors, alumni, and others in support of CTY’s storytelling channels.
  • Ensure technical and transactional copy is written and organized clearly and with the audience in mind.
  • Gather visuals for marketing and communications projects as needed, including working as part of a team with freelance photographers and graphic designers to schedule and execute photo shoots designed to capture imagery of students and staff for variety of projects.
  • Contribute to multiple concurrent projects.
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional team environment with graphic designers, web developers and designers, video producers, photographers, leadership, and other internal clients.
  • Push creativity of all projects so they reflect the brand’s commitment to innovative thinking.
  • Be a contributor at every level of project execution, from creative concept development to final deliverables.
  • Provide project management and leadership for C&M projects, including planning and creative, working across departments at CTY and with outside vendors on production and procurement, and fulfillment.
  • Execute targeted, consistent messages to be used across platforms to solidify the brand position.
  • Gather, incorporate, and share appropriate feedback and approvals as needed.
  • Work with the director of communications and content and creative manager to ensure all editorial meets editorial and voice guidelines and is of the highest professional quality.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet deadlines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Two years progressive experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field required.
  • Three to five years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field strongly preferred.
  • Applicants are required to attach a writing sample when submitting application. Preferably the writing sample would be of a media release, blog post, or feature story.
  • Applicants should upload the writing sample to the supporting documents section of the application.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Mastery of standard word processing programs and content management systems for websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to cross-platform campaigns.
  • Strong creative writing, editing, and oral communication skills for a variety of applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience making transactional information accessible for lay audiences.
  • Working knowledge of graphic design concepts and software.
  • Well versed in AP Style
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Working knowledge of digital media best practices
  • Ability to exercise professionalism, sensitivity, good judgment and problem-solving skills.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

Additional Information:

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US, and must either live in the US or another area in which JHU has a business entity.
  • This position is 100% remote.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
