The Access Services Department seeks aLibrary Specialist who will be primarily responsible for supporting workflows for resource sharing, focused on workflows around materials that circulate to our local Johns Hopkins faculty, students, and staff. This position trains 1-2 student workers, and collaborates with the Service Desk manager to cross train desk students in circulation workflows. In addition, this position resolves patron management issues, fines, and billing issues in coordination with Student Accounts and SIS. This role also generates student billing reports and oversees cash deposits. This position also monitors and assists with BorrowDirect support related specifically to patron account issues or inquiries.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Uses advanced resource sharing techniques to provide exceptional customer services and efficient delivery of materials from the Milton S. Eisenhower Library collection to both our patrons at MSE Library and our partner Johns Hopkins Libraries
  • Uses Horizon, Relais and other software in order to follow up with patrons about their items; sending out library notices; generating expired hold lists; and the ability to replace item barcodes
  • Communicates with other academic institutions about reciprocal borrowing privileges
  • Collects payments for library cards for non-affiliates
  • Promotes the Johns Hopkins Libraries by fostering collegial goodwill and understanding
  • Troubleshoots and reports problems as needed
  • Generates student billing reports, and coordinates with Student Information Systems (SIS) regarding student’s library charges and fees
  • Maintains and improves documentation and communications
  • Supports and participates in Resource Sharing projects
  • Trains student workers in circulation workflow and collaborates with the Service Desk Manager regarding the training of student workers
  • Develops specific student training documentation and programs
  • Reviews and recommends service improvements based on circulation statistics, Qualtrics survey information, and other assessments
  • Participates in the Johns Hopkins Resource Sharing Interest Group
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three years related experience; additional education can substitute for experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3 years related working experience OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Experience with library circulation experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to push book trucks, move, and unpack boxes as needed
  • Must be able to retrieve books from the collection which requires reaching, standing, lifting, and stooping

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Eventually 1-2 student workers

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Starting Salary Range: $17.42 - $23.95/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
