The Department of Radiology seeks a Research Specialist who willutilize solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with Radiological Physics.This position will participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge ofresearch laboratory procedures and practices. Capable of independent judgment in the selection, development, performance and evaluation of research methods; operates and maintains appropriate equipment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with a specific area such as molecular biology, protein biochemistry and/or cell biology.
  • Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results; participate in the creation of manuscripts.
  • Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment. Must be willing to work with mice.
  • Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and /or test reports. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, physics, math or related field required.
  • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Effective interpersonal communication, team work skills, open to work on new clinical research projects is preferred. Familiar with Matlab software
  • Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: N/A

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit for long period of time, and must be able to climb at least 4 flights of stairs.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
