Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide instruction and monitor teaching/learning effectiveness in courses assigned by the Program Director, Dean of Health Sciences, or Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs in the area the instructor has appropriate qualifications. The Laboratory Assistant's primary responsibility is to organize and support the learning experiences that take place in the simulated clinical laboratories for the EMS programs. The Laboratory Assistant collaborates and assists the faculty members who teach skills courses. The Laboratory Assistant facilitates the required practice in the simulated field scenarios. The Laboratory Assistant is accountable to the Emergency Medical Services Programs Director . Excellent computer skills are required and technological experience is recommended due to the interface of computers and mannequin technology in high fidelity simulation. The Laboratory Assistant may be required to assist in the EMS program by teaching didactic courses and clinical courses or as a substitute as needed.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participate in the assessment of instructional needs of the EMS Program. Plan, evaluate, and revise as well as develop and implement curriculum needs, course syllabi, and outcomes to assure the completion of program goals and requirements. Ensure instructional quality for the student as assessed by content mastery and competency-based skills.
  2. Review course, student objectives, and lesson plans for the EMS Program.
  3. Getting EMS courses quality matters certified.
  4. Maintain FERPA standards as applied to public institutions of higher learning.
  5. Use current technology to enhance effectiveness, including but not limited to computers, overhead projectors, PowerPoint, DVD, and smart TVs, and willing to learn and apply any other new technology needed to enhance learning.
  6. Actively participate in meetings called by Program Director, Dean of Health Sciences, or Provost/ Vice-President of Academic Affairs for purpose of disseminating information; providing input into the decision-making process, or for the sharing of expertise with colleagues.
  7. Compile, administer and grade assignments and examinations promptly so that the student is aware of his/her progress and allow time for the development of a plan that will promote student success and a positive outcome. Use computer and internet programs to disseminate information to students, prepare exams, and prepare class presentations as pertinent.
  8. Provide a safe environment for students; encourage students to use available support services; encourage group activities and involvement of classes within health science programs as appropriate. Collaborate with support services to ensure information is shared and discussed.
  9. Be responsible for the security of equipment, classrooms, office, and all other teaching materials.
  10. Assist in the responsibility for upholding LC’s and EMS Program’s rules and regulations. Assisting in implementing changes according to the recommendations set forth by the accrediting agencies and ensure that the program remains in compliance with said rules and regulations.
  11. Utilization of established syllabi and skills sheets for EMS courses, computer web-based skills tracking software, and preparation of lab schedule for courses including specific simulated clinical and field skills experiences, in collaboration with instructor(s).
  12. Maintain, inventory, and order lab supplies and equipment for classes to be taught in the clinical laboratory. In addition; endorses the security of the equipment in the skills and computer laboratories .
  13. Manage practice sessions for students by organizing supplies and equipment, rotations, and faculty support.
  14. Collaborate with EMS Program Director and faculty to plan, implement, and evaluate course curriculum related to laboratory skills .
  15. Promote high standards of excellence in assigned classes.
  16. Maintain close communication with course faculty regarding the progress of students in lab classes .
  17. Prepare demonstrations of skills for preparation of clinical/field rotations under the supervision of the Course Instructor, Clinical Coordinator, and/or EMS Program Director.
  18. May function in an assistant role in specific Laboratory settings under the supervision of the Course Instructor, Clinical Coordinator, and/or EMS Program Director.
  19. Participate in Program and College Faculty Committee meetings as assigned .
  20. Keep informed about major trends and innovations in clinical/field practice as it relates to topics taught in the simulated laboratory.
  21. Maintain current licensure, level of expertise, aware of current changes in discipline, professional competence, and licensure through practice, continuing education, and professional activities.
  22. Provide feedback to EMS faculty members concerning curriculum, especially items related to skills and simulated lab .
  23. May perform check-offs for EMS students .
  24. Stay abreast of changes that occur in the discipline by actively participating in on-campus or off-campus advisory committees or by attending conferences. Maintain a level of expertise in respective clinical/field areas through course work or world of work experiences, and by reading scholarly journals .
  25. Share in the responsibility for the smooth operation of the college by participating in college-wide and departmental committees and activities.
  26. Participate in activities such as orientation, convocation, in-service sessions, graduation meetings, and seminars designed for professional growth and development.
  27. Actively participate in meetings called by the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Professor of Emergency Medical Services and Program Director that are held to disseminate information, provide input into the decision-making process, or for the sharing of expertise with colleagues.
  28. Work a minimum of forty hours per week . Post a minimum of ten office hours per week for student counseling, advising, or tutoring.
  29. Participate as an advisor during early advising or during the registration process . Provide accurate career counseling and guidance as assigned by the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs or the Professor of Emergency Medical Services and Program Director.
  30. Add to the library collection for the disciplines through requests for textbooks, journals, and other materials. Periodically evaluate the library holdings.
  31. Provide information and/or data to the requesting officer so that the proper reports may be completed and filed with the proper educational agency, funding agency, or accrediting agency.
  • If assigned as faculty for the EMS programs:
  • Follow the procedures related to the Registrar's Office such as grade reports and deadlines; attendance record reports; withdrawal deadlines; class changes, and time and room scheduling .
  • Give the students written information regarding course requirements, grade determination, testing, and other assignments as well as information regarding other departmental policies . This information is to be supplied to the student for each course a faculty member is assigned to teach.
  • Compile, administer and grade assignments and examinations on time so that the student is aware of his/her progress and allow time for the development of a plan that will ensure student success and a positive outcome.
  • Follow the proper procedures for requesting textbooks, instructional supplies, expendable supplies, and travel requests.
Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
  • A minimum of a Licensed Paramedic from the Texas Department of State Health Services and/or National Registry and Associate of Applied Science EMS-Paramedic.

  • A minimum of three years experience in EMS practice with 1-2 years teaching experience.

  • Must have a current Paramedic Licenses from the Texas Department of State Health Services and/or National Registry Paramedic Certificate and Associate of Applied Science EMS-Paramedic.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • The Faculty/Laboratory Coordinator demonstrates discipline, competence, pedagogical competence that engages the student and focuses on student learning.

  • The Faculty/Laboratory Coordinator must be able to operate specialized laboratory equipment and various types of audio-visual equipment/instructional materials, software, and various types of manikins .

  • The Faculty/Laboratory Coordinator must be able to assist in the development and use of laboratory, lecture, and scenario strategies that enhance teaching effectiveness and promote student learning by the faculty members .

  • The Faculty/Laboratory Coordinator must have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office programs .

  • The Faculty/Laboratory Coordinator should have a good working knowledge of maintaining student records and dealing with sensitive information.

  • Faculty/ Laboratory Coordinator must be cooperative and professional in his/her communications with the public, the students, colleagues, and college administrators.

  • In addition, must be willing to work days, evenings, and weekends as needed.
