Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
Perform i.v. self-administration studies (perform catheterization surgery in rats; set up and run self-administration sessions; make sterile surgery packs; make rodent catheters; give drug injections). Rodent husbandry (feed and water rats; assess and record animal weight and health status; treat minor illnesses not requiring veterinary services; clean experimental cages). Order supplies if asked by supervisor. Maintain and update experimental database (record daily experimental data; make graphs; perform basic statistical analysis; backup and maintain data backup copies). Experimental system maintenance (change infusion fluid lines; clean chambers; test chambers for proper operation; diagnose and repair minor system problems). Prepare experimental drug solutions (weigh small drug amounts; perform calculations determining proper drug dosing; mix solutions using sterile procedures). Minimum Hiring Standards
Knowledge of behavioral lab procedures and practices; ability to coordinate and manage multiple studies simultaneously, with low error rate; ability to communicate with coworkers and supervisor; ability to work effectively as part of a team. Preferred Hiring Standards
Highly preferred is a bachelor’s degree in a bioscience, previous experience with lab animals, and previous lab experience (as student or employee).
