Position Summary

The Director of Development for Major Gifts supports and enhances the mission of the State University of New York at Buffalo Athletics Department and is responsible for working to optimize philanthropic support for Athletics. The incumbent supports the Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations in the major gift program maintaining an aggressive volume of contacts and solicitations per month recording all activity in prospect management database.

The successful candidate will be a proven advancement professional with a record of success identifying, developing, stewarding and expanding philanthropic and / or revenue based relationships in an athletics-based, higher education setting.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
  • Become fully knowledgeable of the Division’s priorities as they relate to philanthropy. Focus efforts on projects within those defined priorities, e.g., facilities, capital campaigns, student-athlete programmatic support, and scholarships;
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 prospective donors including individuals in early stage cultivation and those requiring attention from the president, deans and department chairs. The incumbent must be able to travel up to 50% of the time, including overnight and occasional weekends;
  • Assist in the coordination of various events for the Blue and White Fund.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree. Professional experience in fund raising or relevant intercollegiate athletics experience required.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills is essential for interaction with Division of Athletics administration, coaches, support staff, academic leaders, university faculty and staff, alumni, volunteers, prospects and donors.
  • Familiarity with and success in the complex environment of a public university.
  • Background in intercollegiate athletics and/or annual giving is preferred.
