Associate Professor in Computer Science (COMP21-57)

The Department of Computer Science at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Associate Professor. We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests from across the spectrum of Computer Science but apart from theoretical computer science (we are not looking to expand the research group Algorithms and Complexity in Durham, ACiD, at present). The Department is currently restructuring its Research Groups and (as well as ACiD) the following research groups will be very likely to be formed within the next few months. We invite applications from candidates who can contribute to and strengthen these groups - but we are also happy to receive applications from candidates working in other areas.

• AIHS (Artificial Intelligence and Human Systems) covers research relating artificial intelligence centred around human needs and aspirations. We welcome candidates wishing to work in applied, cross-disciplinary, human-facing artificial intelligence (AI), adaptation and personalisation, machine behaviour, bias in AI, data analytics, natural language processing, human-centred computing, data science, machine & deep learning, AI-driven human-computer interaction, with application areas such as business, law, ethics, web, e-*, education, augmented-, virtual- and extended reality.

• NESTiD (Network Engineering, Science, and Theory in Durham): we are keen to hear from applicants interested in all areas related to networks and distributed computing such as network systems and applications, distributed computing and algorithms, security and resilience, network science, theory underpinning networks and communication, social network design and human interaction.

• Scientific Computing: we wish to strengthen our expertise around large-scale numerical simulations; this in particular includes colleagues who can create stronger links to the computational disciplines in Durham (Physics, Earth Sciences and Mathematics) or intensify our collaboration with Durham's three supercomputing centres (ARC, N8, DiRAC). Areas of interest include, but are not limited to performance engineering, load-balancing, new supercomputing architectures, programming models or algorithms behind novel numerical schemes.

• VIViD, (Vision, Imaging and Visualisation in Durham), is a broad-based home for all aspects of visual computing research in Durham including computer vision, image processing, medical imaging, visual HCI, robotic sensing, virtual/augmented reality, computational imaging and image/video encoding with contemporary research underpinned via strong links to generalised pattern recognition, neural computation and broader deep machine learning.
