The Professional Tutors for the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Success Center ( STEM SSC ) will perform tutoring and mentoring duties for students in the following gatekeeper courses:
• Biological Concepts: an introduction to the basic concepts used in the study of biology.
• Fundamentals of Biology I: a study of the fundamental concepts of biology designed to acquaint majors with the scientific method and to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through hands-on exploration.
• Fundamentals of Biology II: A continuing study of the fundamental concepts in biology with emphasis placed upon the evolution and diversity of organisms and their interactions through a survey of Kingdoms Prokarya, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia as well as the Protists.
• Chemical Concepts: covers some of the basic mathematical skills needed for success in chemistry courses as well as introducing basic concepts of chemistry.
• General Chemistry I: Builds a foundation in chemistry for science majors. Topics covered include atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, thermo-chemistry, periodic law, gas laws, and solutions.
• General Chemistry II: This course completes the sequence begun in CHM 1201. Topics covered include kinetics, equilibria, pH, solubility, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry.
• College Algebra: topics include functions, rational expressions, systems of linear equations, Factor and Remainder Theorem, operations on functions, radical equations, inequalities, matrices, variations and exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences, series, and the binomial theorem.
• Pre-Calculus: This is an accelerated course in College Algebra and Trigonometry. Topics include linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, radical, root, piecewise, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions; graphs and transformations; equations and inequalities; systems of quations; sequences and series; vectors and applications.
• Trigonometry: topics include conic sections, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, identities and equations, lines, polar coordinates, vectors in the plane, application problems, and complex numbers.
• Calculus I: topics include limits of functions, infinite limits, derivative and techniques of differentiation, implicit differentiation, higher derivatives, graphing, maxima and minima, plane curves, motion, anti-derivatives, indefinite, and definite integrals, and Fundamentals Theorem of Calculus.
• Calculus II: topics include the fundamental theorem of calculus, the definite integral, techniques, and applications of integration
The duties shall include assisting students with homework assignments, assisting students with project and laboratory assignments, assisting instructor, if needed, in the classroom by helping students with in class problems and programs, and mentoring students on understanding the purpose in their respective disciplines. The tutors will provide information to the STEM Success Center Manager on the performance of students taking advantage of the tutoring and mentoring services.

Minimum Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics and at least one-year tutoring or teaching in relevant subjects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Online Tutoring
• Available to work between noon and 11 p.m. every day of the week
• Graduate degree in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics or STEM Education and collegiate tutoring experience in STEM courses.

Tutoring Schedule:

Monday – Thursday: 9am – 8pm
Friday: 9am – 6pm
Saturday: 1pm – 5pm
Sunday: 2pm – 10:00pm

• $20.00 per hour
• 30 hours of tutoring per week for 14 weeks
$8,400 salary from August 26 – December 12 (No Tutoring during Fall break)
• Willing to travel to Central State University’s main campus in Wilberforce, Ohio.
