Academic Advisor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Academic Advisor is part of a comprehensive team whose aim is to provide holistic support services and outreach to NU Global students throughout their pathway transitions, graduation and beyond. The Academic Advisor counsels students on the procedures and requirements of NU Global Boston based programs (Global Pathways and/or NU Immerse) by interpreting the relevant academic and administrative policies and guidelines for the university. S/he offers an objective analysis of students' academic records and abilities, and further assists students in exploring future academics and careers; setting and achieving goals; and preparing for success in the United States and university environment.

The Academic Advisor prepares and revises materials, such as group advising and orientation presentations, handouts, and online communications. Additionally, the Academic Advisor actively reaches out and collaborates closely with instructors, other departments, and colleges to ensure a coordinated approach to student success. The Academic Advisor maintains academic records, actively monitors attendance and class performance, plans and executes intervention strategies, and supports students through both one-on-one meetings and group meetings to help students access academic and non-academic resources on campus, online and in the community. The Academic Advisor also participates in the New Student Arrival Programs, activities related to progression through, transition from, and completion of their program. Additionally, the position participates in programming and projects that further extend student services. The Academic Advisor should take proactive steps to improve communication to, and between, students and faculty as well as take an active role in enhancing the existing systems and reporting mechanisms to better serve NU Global students. The Academic Advisor should serve as students' advocate and liaison to internal and external constituencies and as an agent for change necessary to promote success for NU Global students, while maintaining the mission of NU Global and Northeastern.

Bachelors degree and at least three years experience providing student support to students in a higher education setting. Masters degree preferred. Demonstrated experience working with international students. Previous experience in higher education is preferred. Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal communication (both verbal and written) is necessary. Computer skills and experience in working with databases and student management systems desirable. Ability to learn and effectively utilize the College and University-level computer systems in day-to-day student support is necessary. Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and to juggle many activities simultaneously, take initiative, follow through with projects and to work as an integral member of a team is necessary. The NU Global Academic Advisor should be culturally sensitive and aware of issues pertaining to international students, including language limitations, adjustment issues, academic overload, international students perceptions of authority figures and difference in educational systems.
