About the Opportunity:
Great stories told by top-tier media organizations are called “earned” for a reason. The Media Relations Specialist has experience working with reporters and editors, has cultivated and managed relationships with members of the press and leveraged those relationships to get results in top-tier publications such as the New York Times, NPR, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and the Boston Globe, to name a few.

The Media Relations Specialist is able to work with top scientists and other faculty members and administrators at Northeastern, understand complex sets of facts and identify angles that members of the press respond to favorably. Most importantly, the Media Relations Specialist secures coverage for the university and its faculty frequently and in major news organizations.

Responsibilities:
The Media Relations Specialist stays up-to-date on what the press in general is focused on, including the higher ed press, and is able to identify opportunities for the university that result in earned press.

The Media Relations Specialist role will include additional responsibilities related to the team's work such as morning news scans, aggregating coverage, preparing briefing documents for high-tier interviews, researching various topics, and more.

As it is the case for every member of the Communications team, the Media Relations Specialist is expected to be responsive outside of regular business hours, and occasionally work on assignments in the evenings and on weekends.

This position is located at the Boston campus and is not eligible for remote work. Experience in higher education is not necessary.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-4 years of experience doing media relations representing for - or nonprofit brands
