The Autism Informatics Research Program is a collaboration between faculty at Northeastern University (NU) and Maine Medical Center (MMC), supported through the Roux Institute, working on a project entitled “Predicting Challenging Behaviors in Psychiatric Inpatients with Autism Using Wearable Biosensor Data and Machine Learning Algorithms.” The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether clinical staff can use peripheral physiological arousal and motion data measured by a wearable biosensor to predict aggression to others, self-injury, and emotion dysregulation in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

ASD is one of the most common childhood disorders (1 in 59), and it is associated with high health care costs. Youth with ASD are also at increased risk for a range of co-occurring psychiatric and behavioral issues compared to the general population. Aggression, self-injury, and emotion dysregulation are some of the most frequently observed challenging behaviors in youth with ASD, especially in the more severely affected, and rank among the most common causes for referral to behavioral healthcare services. Physical aggression, including hitting, biting, scratching, and throwing objects at others, is particularly debilitating because it often occurs without warning, sometimes long after any observable trigger, creating an environment of unpredictability. Unpredictable aggression can create a barrier to accessing community, therapeutic, medical, and educational services. For instance, families report that aggression increases their stress, isolation, and financial burden and decreases available support options because they are understandably afraid to put their child with ASD into potentially stressful environments that might lead to aggression without warning. Frequent aggression can also have harmful effects on professional support providers, leading to increased sick days, higher turnover rates, and compensatory payments for injury. This predicament can demoralize parents and providers, accelerate negative patient trajectories, and lead to homebound or residential living placement, collectively decreasing quality of life while increasing healthcare costs.

Responsibilities:
We seek a Project Manager to assist our testing of the feasibility, usability, and incipient efficacy of a real-time push notification system capable of automatically alerting inpatient staff of imminent aggression to others, self-injury, and emotion dysregulation. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Physical presence in Portland, ME;

  • Consult with leadership and key stakeholders to clarify and define project requirements;

  • Create and maintain the product backlog and prioritize among requirements during implementation;

  • Oversee daily project management and administration, including planning deliverables, monitoring performance, managing timelines, and resolving problems that hinder the team's work;

  • Escalate project issues and roadblocks to management for resolution as appropriate;

  • Ensure the project is completed by defined schedules; and

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with third-party vendors as stakeholders in project completion.

  • Outstanding communication, facilitation, negotiation, and coaching skills; and

  • Clearly and concisely communicate verbally and in writing.

    Education/Experience:

  • Master's Degree or higher (certification in Project Management or Agile is a plus);

  • Minimum of five years related experience;

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating meetings at multiple levels of an organization and an understanding of facilitation techniques; and

  • Experience with and proficiency in project coordination/scrum software (Asana, Confluence, etc.).
