Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. On its Boston campus, the university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research.

About the Opportunity:
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities seeks two postdoctoral research associates to support an NSF-funded project to study the diffusion of gender equity ideas through university and scholarly networks. This mixed-methods project will analyze the spread and growth of ideas for organizational change to promote gender equity in STEM fields, seeded through the NSF ADVANCE program. The fellows will join an interdisciplinary team led by Professor Kathrin Zippel and Assistant Professor Laura K. Nelson in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and will include other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students from social, network, and computer science.

Responsibilities:
One postdoctoral research associate will be expected to play a leading role in the collection and analysis of quantitative data, including relational and text data. The other postdoctoral research associate will lead the collection and analysis of qualitative data (interviews). Both will help author reports, papers and journal articles using project data; and to help coordinate tasks across the research team.

These are one-year, full-time, benefits-eligible positions starting in July or September of 2021 and running through August of 2022, located at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. The positions are subject to renewal or extension depending on funding availability and university need. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Qualifications:
  • Must have a PhD in social science, data science, network science or related fields by the time of hire
  • Knowledge or interest in gender (equity), intersectionality, diversity, organizations, STEM fields, higher education, and the diffusion of ideas
  • Proficiency with a programming language, preferably R, Python, Julia, or Go for the quantitative role
  • Proficiency with qualitative data collection (interviews) and analysis (texts) for the qualitative role
  • Experience with either computational text analysis techniques, social network analysis or both
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Data visualization skills
  • Advanced computational text analysis knowledge and/or advanced social network analysis experience
  • Mixed methods approaches
  • Ability to write and publish in social science journals
  • Attention to practices around reproducible and open science

  • Salary Grade:
