About the Opportunity:
Instructional Support Laboratory Technician

Reporting to the Introductory Physics Laboratory (IPL) Supervisor, the Instructional Support Laboratory Technician will provide general support for the IPL as well as the Advanced Laboratories, Lecture Demonstrations, and Interactive Learning Sessions (ILS) as needed.

The Instructional Support Laboratory Technician, qualified and experienced in STEM fields, particularly physics and/or related electronics, is a vital member of the Physics Department teaching and instructional team. A team player, the Instructional Support Laboratory Technician will provide close support to the Introductory Physics Lab supervisor and other related faculty, while also providing leadership and guidance for graduate student Teaching Assistants (TAs), undergraduate teaching fellows (UGTF), and work-study students.

Responsibilities:

25% - Daily Teaching Lab Inspections and Coverage: The Instructional Support Laboratory Technician will be present for the main lab shifts each day (starting at 8:00am, 10:00am, 11:45am, 1:35pm, and 2:50pm) to inspect the lab equipment for functionality, to check for the presence and preparation of TAs, and to help TAs and undergraduate students with various questions and problems, including finding the correct lab room, which can change weekly.

Actively assist the TAs with day-to-day problems involving equipment and supplies during ongoing teaching laboratories. Identifying chronic problems and helping to improve the experiments and the student learning experience. Helping with the daily break-down and set-up of laboratory equipment, usually with assistance from work-study students, including the make-up labs at end of term.

20% - Supply, Consumable, and Equipment Ordering and Management: assist with the projections of needed consumables and other supplies for lab sections, confirm the required amounts and, working with the Department Business Manager, place all orders in a timely manner. Inventory supplies and equipment in keeping with department practices - including keeping digital records of lab equipment, parts, drawings and available supply vendors. Organize and maintain the IPL stockrooms.

20% - Teaching Assistant and Student Oversight: provide oversight and management of the graduate TAs and undergraduate UGTFs who teach the IPL lab courses as well as the undergraduate student work-study employees who break-down, move, and set-up lab equipment daily throughout the term.

Participate in meetings with all teaching personnel: TAs, part-time instructors, teaching faculty, and UGTFs, especially for orientation meetings at the beginning of each term.

Interact with various University offices as needed for student employment issues - including the Physics Department Administration, Student Employment, etc.

Posting of signs and student rosters as needed (both digitally and hard copy).

15% - Safety Resource: work with IPL staff, Department Safety Officer, College Safety Officer, and Environmental Health & Safety to design appropriate safety trainings for TAs and other students in lab. Administer trainings and follow-up as needed. Report any safety issues to Department Safety Officer and College Safety Officer.

Ensure all IPL facilities are kept in inspection-ready condition. Help maintain IPL radioactive source log and inventory.

15% - Equipment and Facilities: become proficient in maintenance and operation of IPL lab equipment, computers, and specialized IPL software. Act as subject matter expert for TAs and students. Remain current on needed upgrades and troubleshoot known issues.

Work with Northeastern Facilities and Information Technology Services (ITS) as needed on issues in IPL spaces or with IPL equipment.

5% - Other Duties as Assigned: other facility, training, or administrative duties necessary for the successful operation of IPL teaching mission may be assigned from time to time, including assistance with lecture demonstrations and the ILS sections.

This position will supervise graduate students and undergraduate students employed in the lab

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required in an appropriate STEM field (physics and electronics experience preferred) as well as experience in a teaching lab environment.

Familiarity with lab equipment, including computers and the integration of lab experiments with computers. Supervisory capabilities and interpersonal skills are a necessary and important part of this job. Interest in educational experiments along with general mechanical/electronics skills and know how.

Record-keeping and administration experience commensurate with tracking the needs of 35-40 graduate assistants and over 2500 undergraduate students annually. Experience with Banner and Canvas systems desired.


Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Physics.
