Job Summary
The Academic Advisor serves as the frontline academic advising contact for graduate students in the College of Education to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. The Academic Advisor provides graduate students with in-depth information concerning course descriptions, program requirements, prerequisite and registration procedures, and plays a vital role in maximizing graduate students' persistence to graduation. The Academic Advisor is also actively involved in the recruitment of students for graduate programs in the College of Education. The College of Education currently represents the largest graduate population at Georgia Southern University, and the majority of its students are online students.

Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University
  • Recruit prospective graduate students to the College of Education
  • Maintain consistent communication and be accessible to prospective students throughout the admissions process
  • Review admission application documents and assist College of Education program directors with admission review processes
  • Counsel students, assist with developing academic schedules, and make referrals to services offered on-campus
  • Provide support to faculty members who support College of Education graduate programs
  • Create advising materials and checklist in consultation with programs and departments
  • Assist with data collection, data entry, analyses and creation of statistical reports
  • Assist with contacting current and prospective students to schedule appointments and provide notification of meetings and special events
  • Audit student degree and academic program records in Banner
  • Represent center and college at meetings, open houses and recruitment events
  • Advise students on options to satisfy degree requirements, program changes, and resolution of academic problems
  • Develop and maintain appropriate student files and records
  • Monitor student academic progress
  • Support students in establishment of academic and career goals and identify challenges that may negatively impact student success
  • Comply with and enforce student privacy regulations such as FERPA
  • Work closely with Graduate Admissions and the College of Graduate Studies to apply graduate student policies
  • May participate with Advisor II and III on special projects or tasks as assigned/approved by supervisor
  • Provide current and prospective students with in-depth information regarding course descriptions, prerequisites, program requirements and registration procedures
  • Assist in resolution of individual academic problems

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree

Required Experience
  • One or more years of related work experience
