Key Position Information:
Kennel workers will be taking care of animals such as dogs and cats, but may also occasionally find themselves in contact with other domestic animals. This includes general up-keep of all animals and their care (Cleaning, feeding, walking, etc.)
Position Summary:
Kennel workers are responsible for providing basic animal care. Kennel workers will be taking care of animals such as dogs and cats, but may also occasionally find themselves in contact with other domestic animals in places like veterinary clinics and animal shelters. Those interested are expected to have prior experience with animals.
They are in charge of the general upkeep of animals in their care and must provide individualized attention to them so they stay healthy and happy, anticipating their needs if necessary.
General duties include keeping cages clean and sanitized; walking, feeding and picking up after the animals; and reporting on the animal's condition.
Essential Duties
- Preparing food and feeding the animals
- Keeping animals clean and grooming them
- Exercising dogs in a yard or taking them for walks
- Cleaning out kennels and cages
- Maintaining cages, runs and grounds
- Looking after animals which are elderly, ill or distressed
Requirements::
Education:
None.
Experience:
Previous experience working with animals preferred.
Knowledge:
- Confidence in handling animals
- Ability to communicate with a range of people
Skills:
- Good teamworking skills
- Organisational skills
- Good observational skills to notice changes in animals' behaviour
- Problem-solving

- Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
- Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
