The Department of Ophthalmology seeks an Ophthalmic Clinical Supervisor who will supervise all technicians in the clinic. This individual will also be responsible for the day-to-day operations, clinic flow, and performance of Ophthalmic Technicians. In cooperation with the Clinic Manager, they will plan, manage, and communicate Technician schedules and adjustments that may be needed on unusual staffing days such as inclement weather, FMLA leaves, etc. They will complete an assessment of all Technician clinical operations and identify trends and/or problems in need of improvement as well as will organize and implement the orientation and training program for new Technician staff and float pool Technicians assigned to the clinic.

This role also interviews Technician applicants for employment and makes selection of new staff, participates in clinical skill and management training through in-service programs to enhance knowledge level as well as evaluates and counsels Technician staff by regularly (at least quarterly) obtaining written and oral feedback from physicians, Division Chief, and Division Clinic Manager. They are responsible for disciplinary action with Technicians according to established guidelines and prepares and/or directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary equipment, instruments, supplies, and medications required for examinations, treatments, and/or procedures.

The Ophthalmic Clinical Supervisor also resolves patient problems or refers them to appropriate resources for resolution, acts as point person for Technician concerns and questions and ensures compliance with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Wilmer Eye Institute and the Joint Commission standards, policies, and procedures. This role assists Ophthalmologists with patient care by performing ocular examination and testing. Also provides surgical assistance with minor outpatient procedures; basic instrument care, as listed in the essential functions of the job.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Patient Exams:

  • Knows how to obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history to include: chief complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illnesses, medications, allergies and drug reactions.
  • Assists the Ophthalmologist with patient care by performing ocular examination and testing.
  • Assists with minor outpatient procedures; basic instrument care.
  • Performs accurate retinoscopy to determine objective refractive error.
  • Measures visual acuity at distance and near utilizing test appropriate for age and education, and records accurately. Performs pinhole testing when indicated.
  • Performs and records contrast sensitivity, Ishihara or HRR color vision testing.
  • Accurately measures and records current lens power with a lensometer.
  • Performs and records Amsler grid and Schirmer testing.
  • Evaluates the pupil, most notably for afferent defects.
  • Properly operates common non-automated and automated ophthalmic equipment including, but not limited to: IOL Master, Orb-scan, bright field acuity testing (BAT), potential acuity meter (PAM), autorefractor, Humphrey visual field, OCT, and HRT.
  • Performs basic tonometry.
  • Has an understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Patient Services:

  • Familiar with patient schedules and clinic workflow.
  • Provides education on technical services to patients.
  • Applies proper ocular dressings and shields.
  • Properly instills eye drops and understands the indication/contraindication for use in dilation, for use in tests requiring corneal anesthetic including tonometry, and for use in other tests that may be required by the physician.
  • Properly assists physically or visually disabled patients.
  • Adheres to regulations regarding drug samples and drug sample logs.

Instrument Maintenance:

  • Performs routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment.
  • Stocks examination rooms in assigned areas and ensures medication expiration dates are current.
  • Disinfects and maintains examination rooms.
  • Assures compliance and par of all CODE CART supplies and pediatric AEDs.

Office Minor Surgery:

  • Confirms that patient’s informed consent is obtained prior to procedure.
  • Assembles instrument tray for lid lesion treatment or lacrimal probe / plugs.
  • Understands disposition of materials and waste.
  • Performs proper care and sterilization of instruments.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of 3 years’ experience performing ophthalmic testing, with some supervisory or related administrative experience required. COA Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance coverage, medical terminology and competent computer skills preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General Medical Knowledge.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Understands basic ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocular emergencies.
  • Understands and practices the fundamentals of microbial control.
  • Completes currently required JHMI courses, such as: Self learning educational packets, Joint Commission and HIPAA regulations.

Scope of Responsibility

  • Knows the informal and formal department goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division.
  • Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.

Decision Making

  • On a regular and continuous basis exercises sound judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervises all technicians in the clinic.
  • Guides the work of others.

  • Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring strong oral and written communication skills.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • COA Certification Required.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Working Conditions:Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
