The Department of General Internal Medicine seeks aResearch Assistant who, under the direction of the Principal Investigators and Research Program Managers, will assist in the coordination and execution of activities that support the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity’s (JHCHE) research goals and research studies, including completing the evaluation and dissemination of the RICH LIFE Project, a clinical trial, and implementing new research studies. The Center works to promote equity in health for at-risk populations through advancing scientific knowledge, promoting sustainable changes in practice and policy, partnering with communities, raising public awareness of health inequities, and training scholars.

The RICH LIFE Project is a pragmatic cluster randomized trial designed to compare the effectiveness of clinic-based standard of care plus audit, feedback and education to an intervention that uses a collaborative care team, a community health worker and specialist consultation to deliver contextualized, appropriately stepped care (CC/Stepped Care) for reducing disparities and improving patient-centered outcomes among patients with hypertension. The study team enrolled 1,822 patient participants from thirty primary care clinics, including Federally Qualified Health Centers, across Maryland and Pennsylvania. The team used patient and broad stakeholder engagement and apply principles of community-based participatory research to refine and adapt intervention protocols and materials to the needs of participating organizations, clinic sites, and populations. The goal of the study is to improve care for hypertension and reduce racial disparities related to health outcomes.

The incumbent will work with adult community members, faculty, staff, and students from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. They will assist the JHCHE Director and leadership with publications, public facing presentations, and other assigned duties. They may work with our clinical partners and interact with providers, MAs, other clinical staff, and adult (21 and older) research participants. This position will report to Katie Dietz, MPH, Sr. Research Program Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains knowledge of research study protocols.
  • Assists in the development of presentations, publications, toolkits, flyers, letters and other materials for dissemination of research and Center materials.
  • Assists in the development of tables and figures for reports and manuscripts.
  • Performs literature reviews.
  • Assists in the coordination and participates in research study meetings, including the preparation of agendas and taking of detailed meeting minutes.
  • Assists with Center communication and dissemination efforts, including website and newsletter maintenance and development.
  • Assists in the maintenance of project databases.
  • Assists with community engagement activities
  • Assists program manager in preparing required funder reports.
  • Using internal software tools, database, and script guidelines, reach out to candidates on the phone to speak with them about the project, determine eligibility, obtain oral consent, and record responses to interview questions. Ensures security, quality, and confidentiality of data by following policies and procedures. Make follow-up survey calls to enrolled participants. Completes data entry Participate in staff meetings. Completes all training in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Additional administrative tasks may include:

    Assists program manager as necessary regarding typing, filing, faxing, mass mailings, chart review. Assists in preparing recruitment and tracking update reports. Assists in preparing monthly quality control and data management reports. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree, and some related experience.
  • The successful candidate will have strong communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior research or project implementation experience.
  • Experience working in clinical settings and/or with providers and clinical staff.
  • Experience in database operations and/or experience in coordination of medical or laboratory research.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Reliable transportation required; currently telecommuting.
  • Must be able to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Must have the ability to work well and communicate effectively with others, and execute, consolidate and organize ideas.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, initiative, leadership skills, attention to detail, be able to take direction, and work independently and as part of a team (teams of researchers and with diverse subject populations in particular).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of PC operations and software applications such as MS Windows, Excel, Word, OneDrive, and Access required.
  • Ability to learn new database and software applications is required.
  • Ability to follow multiple, detailed directions of various protocols.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and diverse patient populations highly desired. Must have excellent time management skills.
Physical Requirements:

    Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
