Martin, PhD, and Raymond Koehler, PhD (https://anesthesiology.hopkinsmedicine.org/research-home/research-programs/pediatric-neuroscience-research-lab/) in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins University. Our group has a collective h-index of over 110 and 35,000 citations (Google Scholar). We perform state-of-the-art and innovative experiments using a preclinical large animal model to study brain injury mechanisms and potential treatments for newborn babies that suffer low oxygen supply at birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy).

Our NIH-supported research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and pharmacologic/genetic therapeutics to reduce the risk of cell death and permanent brain injury that causes neurological and cognitive disorders. The technology that we use includes precision, stereotaxically-guided brain nucleus lesioning, fMRI, viral-mediated conditional transgenic manipulations, and protocols for cardiac arrest, therapeutic hypothermia, anesthesia, and physiologic monitoring. Team work is essential in our laboratory. The work schedule for these experiments can be variable and includes: 7:30 AM-4 PM, noon-8 PM, and 7 PM-7 AM shifts. Occasional weekend shifts for animal care will be requested.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Research Technician will conduct impactful physiologic experiments in a preclinical large animal model. All protocols follow USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  • Techniques include delivering anesthesia, performing tracheal intubation and basic surgical techniques for vascular cannulation, and doing a cardiac arrest and resuscitation protocol with physiologic monitoring, blood gas management, and therapeutic hypothermia. Stereotaxic brain injections, invasive EEG electrode placement, EEG monitoring, and MRI are also part of our protocols.
  • We conduct physiologic and molecular biology work that can eventuate in high impact publications with the hope of targeting journals such asCell,Neuron,Nature,Nature Neuroscience, andScience.
  • The responsibilities will include working with a research team to conduct the animal experiments and post-operative care, preparing brain fixatives and buffers, animal perfusions, and precise brain and other organ dissections for neuropathology studies.
  • Additional duties include preparation of sterile surgical packets, histologic paraffin processing to cut brain specimens, histologic staining, data entry, animal feeding, cage clean-up and sanitation, and general laboratory organization.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.
  • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Experience with preparation of brain fixatives, histology, immunohistochemistry, and western blotting.
  • Good oral communication skills in English and a collaborative and cooperative team spirit are required.
  • High priority candidates need to have, at a minimum, experience with preclinical animal models.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Helpful experience would be in a neuroscience-related field, specifically with brain tissue processing, tissue cutting, immunohistochemistry, neuroanatomy, brain biochemistry, and microscopy.
  • Experience with perfusing animals is preferred.
  • Applicants with training in veterinary science are encouraged to apply.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
