Job Description

The College of Science (COS) and the Pamplin College of Business (PCOB) seek an experienced, motivated, and resourceful individual to direct Impact, a living learning community (LLC) for students.

The Impact LLC’s mission is to create a community of thinkers and doers passionate about using data to find solutions to humanity’s complex problems with support and opportunities to transform this passion into positive change for society. The Impact LLC provides students the opportunity to gain insights into the transdisciplinary world of data analytics and data science and its application to real world problems and enables them to interact and learn from Virginia Tech faculty and community partners with expertise in the area of data analytics.

The Impact LLC is open to undergraduate students majoring in business, science, and other majors at Virginia Tech. The close-knit community encourages creativity, leadership, responsibility, inclusivity and diversity, building strong relationships, and is committed to a productive environment for student growth, and student inclusiveness, diversity, and retention.

The program director of the Impact LLC may be a Professor of Practice, Collegiate Faculty member, or an Instructor who will have their academic home in COS. The program director is a calendar-year position with a 60% academic program and 40% administrative/student life appointment. This position includes leading the day-to-day administration of the Impact LLC, and overseeing the development, teaching and assessment of its integrated curricular, cocurricular, and research programs.

Other Position Requirements

  • Response to student issues and concerns may require evening and weekend hours
  • In-person attendance at Impact LLC events may be necessary during evening and weekend hours.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate degree
  • Experience: At least 2 years university-level teaching experience; experience in data analytics or data science or a related field
  • Knowledge and technical sophistication in the practice of data analytics and/or data science in business, government, nonprofit and/or laboratory settings, including the application to open-ended problems
  • Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
    • Leadership skills
    • Problem-solving skills based on a multidisciplinary approach
    • Decision-making skills
    • Interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to work in teams and to serve all stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in related field or comparable experience/training in a discipline that regularly utilizes data-analytic or data science techniques
  • Experience working with Residence Life programs at a large university
  • Training in higher education pedagogy and experience teaching with high impact educational practices
