Assistant Director, Knight-Bagehot Fellowship

Graduate School of Journalism

The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for the Assistant Director (AD), Knight-Bagehot Fellowship. The incumbent will help run one of the most prestigious fellowships in the world. This involves coordinating the selection of each year’s Fellows and communicating with the Fellows about the requirements and expectations of the program. Along with the Director, the AD will help plan and execute the seminars, dinners and tours that make up the content of the Fellowship. During the year, the incumbent will also be available to help Fellows successfully navigate the sometimes-complicated University system.

The Assistant Director is also expected to play a significant role in the cultivation of new donors, communication with existing donors, and managing and tracking the donation process. The AD will have a front-facing role in the program and will routinely communicate with the Knight-Bagehot Advisory Board, alumni, foundations, development advisors, and stakeholders in the Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism and the Business School.

The Assistant Director for the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship program directs and administers a range of programs, seminars, workshops and projects connected to economics, business and technology journalism. These include but are not limited to:

  • Designing training and educational programs for journalism Fellows specializing in business, finance and technology
  • Planning public events connected to business, financial and technology reporting
  • Planning of weekly seminars/dinners with media and business leaders
  • Assisting with fundraising, including helping to plan the annual banquet for Knight-Bagehot board, alumni and other stakeholders
  • Following up on donations by helping to submit gift transmittals, and maintaining financial database information to track donors’ gifts
  • Production of web-based and printed educational materials and conference/grant deliverables
  • Project development and grant proposal writing
  • Managing media and social media outreach

The Assistant Director works closely with the Director and program leaders to shape programs and events responsive to the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship’s mission; to set program and budget priorities; and to manage events, fellowships or award judging and other activities.

The AD serves as Knight-Bagehot liaison to committees within the Journalism School and faculty, and Columbia University broadly; performs other related supervisory and planning duties as assigned.

Education:           Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent; master’s preferred.

Experience:          Minimum 3-5 years’ related experience.
