The Department of History at the University of South Alabama invites applications for a full- time (9-month), tenure-track assistant professorship in African American History or History of the African Diaspora, beginning August 15, 2022. Chronological period and specialization are open. A PhD in History, African American Studies, or a closely related field is preferred, but advanced ABD candidates will be considered.

The University of South Alabama is a public research institution with over 100 academic programs and a student body of more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university's 1200 acre-campus is located in Mobile, Alabama, a port city with a diverse population, vibrant downtown, and rich cultural history. Roughly a forty-five-minute drive from the Gulf of Mexico and two hours from New Orleans, Mobile and the University of South Alabama offer unique opportunities to explore the American South and Gulf Coast.

The successful candidate will join a department of dynamic scholars and teachers committed to the goal of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the department's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We especially welcome applicants who come from groups that are historically underrepresented in the professoriate. Responsibilities include an active research agenda as well as teaching survey courses and advanced upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization. History Department affiliations with university programs in African American Studies, Gender Studies, Jewish and Holocaust Studies, and the Honors College, among others, also offer a variety of interdisciplinary teaching opportunities. Additional responsibilities will include student advising and mentoring, curriculum and program development, participation in departmental, college, and university governance structures.

Applicants should submit a cover letter describing the candidate's teaching and research interests, a current CV, and a Diversity Statement. The Diversity Statement should reflect on your experience creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment, explain how you will contribute to the Department of History's commitment to diversity, and discuss future visions for expanding that commitment in teaching, service, and community outreach. Letters of recommendation, writing samples, official transcripts, and other materials may be requested later in the search process. Initial materials should be sent electronically to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Timothy J. Lombardo, at history@southalabama.edu.

Review of materials will begin on September 13, 2021, and continue until the position is filled.

The University of South Alabama is an EO/AA employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression), religion, age, genetic information, disability, or protected veteran status. Members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
