Job Details

Haverford College seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of organic chemistry with a biological focus to begin in Fall of 2022. The College and Department are committed to building and supporting an equitable and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. Hence, those identifying as women or as members of other groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields (for instance, Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Indigenous' people) are strongly encouraged to apply.

A completed Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required. At least one year (as of July 2022) of professional research experience beyond the Ph.D. is required; examples include but are not limited to academic postdoctoral research, work in industrial/government labs, and science education research. Successful applicants will be expected to pursue an active research program with undergraduate students focused on organic chemistry, contribute to all levels of the chemistry curriculum, and add new advanced courses in their area(s) of expertise. The courses the successful candidate would be able to teach include introductory chemistry, second-year organic chemistry, societal relevance of chemistry, and junior-level integrative laboratories ("Superlab"). Ability and interest in contributing to other College programs and interdisciplinary initiatives in health studies, biochemistry/biophysics, neuroscience, environmental studies, visual studies, scientific computing or other areas will be viewed positively.

Haverford College is a research-intensive undergraduate institution, where faculty in the Department of Chemistry conduct exciting, high-impact, scholarly work alongside undergraduate collaborators. Haverford College's commitment to social justice is reflected in our work toward a more just, inclusive and equitable community; this commitment is also reflected in the ethical engagement of our students, faculty, and staff.

  • Research Statement: (Four pages maximum) Please discuss how your area of research will make contributions to your field at a small undergraduate institution, and how you will include and inspire undergraduates in your research program. It would be helpful to begin the research statement with a summary (up to one page) that is accessible to a general audience.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement: (Two pages maximum) Please discuss your thoughts and experience concerning ways to promote learning, research, advising, and informal spaces and interactions that will engage students with different backgrounds, identities, experiences, and interests.
