Job Summary

The Office of Information technology has a new position for a Cloud Engineer! This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a highly visible and important effort in support of our research institutes as a new member of a new team providing a new service! Reporting to the Associate Director of Secure Research Computing, this position will be a key contributor to the development of secure cloud environments for researchers including designing and implementing compute environments that meet federal standards. The Cloud Engineer will deploy and manage blueprints and technologies that will enforce CMMC controls across multiple cloud and hybrid cloud platforms (starting with Microsoft Azure Government). This will include providing solid customer service, consulting, and hands-on assistance where needed to research application owners, ensuring their applications meet compliance standards. The Cloud Engineer will work in a highly collaborative environment with the Enterprise Cloud Architect, mentoring research application owners and teammates while learning cross-functional skills to support a range of technologies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Cloud Engineering:
  • Develop, integrate, test and deploy the secure public cloud service including Infrastructure as Code, Continuous Integration and Deployment and Application components.
  • Contribute to the engineering and implementation of a secure public cloud infrastructure.
  • Implement and maintain cloud systems, integrating the required CMMC security controls.
  • Leverage scripting, automation and configuration management tools to accelerate compliance and adoption of the secure cloud environment.
  • Participate in technical planning activities and provide analysis on how to implement plans and the impact of plans to budget and staffing and existing infrastructure.
  • Implement, manage and tune cloud-specific security toolsets and processes.
  • Document system security plan and operational procedures.

Technical Consulting with Research Teams:
  • Consult with research application owners to assist in adapting their applications to a compliant public cloud environment.
  • Collaborate with research application owners, the Office of Information Security, the Cloud Architecture team as well as Enterprise Services Messaging and Collaboration Team to understand application and network architecture and behavior and design adequate controls.

Operational and Security Compliance Monitoring:
  • Monitor the secure research cloud landing zone, research applications and hybrid system components for threats and provide response support to address active events.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly security and compliance validation activities and generate reports.
  • Resolve service incidents in a timely manner while continually striving to identify and eliminate the root cause of incidents.
  • Escalate security incidents to central security operations team.

Professional Development:
  • This position will maintain professional expertise in the field by reviewing trade publications lists, studying the latest vendor trends, reviewing pertinent mailing lists and attending seminars, training sessions and conferences.
  • This position will identify and elect relevant training opportunities that would be most beneficial to the organization.

What We Can Offer

  • Annual salary range for this position is $100,000 to $110,000.

What We Require
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
    • A combination of education and related experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • 2 years experience with cloud services and technologies, Azure preferred.
  • 2 years of experience in scripting and automation or application development.
  • At least 1 year experience managing systems to meet compliance controls (e.g. FISMA, NIST, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, etc.).

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Azure experience and certifications (e.g. Azure Administrator, Azure Developer, AZ-500).
  • Other cloud system operations experience (e.g. AWS, GCP).
  • Cloud Workload Protection Platform (CWPP) or Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) experience.
  • Experience monitoring and managing the security operations of enterprise systems and applications (CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Azure Monitoring, Security Center, Sentinel, Log Analytics).
  • Experience with IT security, networking, system design and data privacy best practices.
  • Experience with UNIX, Linux, Windows or database administration in a research or research environment.
  • Understanding of networking, DNS and DHCP.
  • Understanding of firewall and load balancing technologies.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc).
  • Experience with at least one development or scripting language.
