Lecturer in Commercial Photography

Department Summary

The College of Humanities and the Arts operates a faculty-led student marketing team that is responsible for creating marketing materials for the College and the Hammer Theater. Four instructors, of graphic design, photography, videography, and professional/technical writing, each teach a relevant section of HA 187 Creative Team Practicum. The goal of this course is to create an on-campus opportunity for hands-on practical application of concepts and skills for students from a variety of disciplines (Technical Writing, Film, Photography, Graphic Design) to learn and to collaborate in a fast-paced environment that produces real-world deliverables and is representative of work environments that graduates of these majors are likely to encounter in the beginning of their professional careers. The team produces logos, ad-blasts, posters, ads, brochures, flyers, digital banners, programs, blue postcards, web site content plus articles or written text for e-newsletters (Hammer’s Applause; School of Music’s Upbeat), blogs and/or magazines (H&A’s Expressions), video and photography. The work of the marketing team is coordinated by a project manager.

Brief Description of Duties

The College of Humanities and the Arts is searching for a part-time faculty to encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments. We are especially seeking a photographer with a well-established record of commercial photography to teach HA 187 Creative Team Practicum. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Marketing and Communications project manager and the other faculty teaching the HA 187 sections in guiding the students in the team to create marketing materials for the College and the Hammer Theater. Lecturers are also required to participate in 1-2 faculty meetings each semester and provide assessment data and information to the College.

Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

All Faculty should be organizing their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.|
