The VCUL Collections Care Technician assists the Collections Care Librarian/Conservator in a variety of tasks to ensure that VCUL collection materials are accessible and in usable condition.
The successful candidate will:
- Repair and care for materials from VCU Library’s circulating collections: mending paper, rebinding books, re-sewing, spine repairs, making enclosures to house materials, and assisting with other collections care tasks in a variety of formats.
- Assist when we have a leak or other emergency that requires a response to protect collections.
- Process items sent to the bindery, creating lists in their software and packaging shipments.
- Edit tutorial videos.
- Check items in and out of “repair” in Alma.
- Assist in shelving items in need of repair.
- Maintain spreadsheets with condition details.
- Help with regular workspace maintenance and upkeep.
- Assist with additional projects as needed.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of book structure, previous experience working in a library.
- Experience in repairing books, crafts, sewing, or the arts.
- Experience using databases, e.g. Alma.
- Experience using Adobe Premiere or other film editing software.
Up to 29 hours per week at the rate of $11.00 – $12.75 per hour, depending on experience.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated manual dexterity and coordination.
- Ability to discern differences in weight, texture, and quality of materials.
- Ability to master precise measuring and cutting.
- Ability to work independently and maintain a record of work.
- Demonstrated problem solving capability and organizational skills.
- Ability to collaborate and share space in a workshop environment.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
