Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The Office of Student Services in the College of Humanities and Sciences is recruiting for two academic advisor positions, an Academic Advisor for our School of World Studies and a Senior Academic Advisor for our Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture. The incumbents to these positions will sustain an environment of effective academic advising for undergraduate students in the College to support VCU being a leader among national research universities in providing all students with high-quality learning/living experiences focused on inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global environment. More specifically, to provide resources to maintain the student to advisor ratio in the Robertson School of Media and Culture which houses the mass communications major, and in the School of World Studies, which houses the following majors: Anthropology, Foreign Language, International Studies, and Religious Studies. Meeting these needs will improve student engagement through effective academic advising while supporting the identified graduation rates and retention metrics. Minimum Hiring Standards
For the Academic Advisor (World Studies) position, the requirements are:

  • A minimum of one year of professional experience in a college or university setting.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .




For the Senior Academic Advisor (Robertson School of Media and Culture) position, the requirements are:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Master’s degree in Mass Communications, Anthropology, Foreign Language, Religious Studies, International Studies, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience creating, implementing, and assessing programming and/or high-impact practices in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with at-risk student populations
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative work, including service on committees related to student engagement, student success, departmental service, or academic advising.




For the Senior Academic Advisor (Robertson School of Media and Culture) position additional preferred standards are:

  • A minimum of 3 years professional advising experience or equivalent experience in a related career field such as social work, counseling, or individualized counseling in K-12.
  • Completion of coursework or training related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as topics related to leadership such as conflict resolution, coaching/mentoring, communication styles, or navigating change.
