General Description

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a gift officer to join our team in achieving our fundraising objectives. The Assistant Director of Development is an integral member of the School’s External Affairs team in our effort to secure philanthropic support for the Krieger School to pursue its mission of education, research, and discovery. Our team is dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of the School to realize our mission.

The Assistant Director of Development will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective annual, major and planned giving donors. This involves prospect research and developing effective solicitation strategies as well as stewarding donors throughout the giving process. The Assistant Director of Development will maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on undergraduate, graduate, and part-time Masters alumni.

Primary Duties

• Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 100 leadership annual, major, and planned gift prospects ($100,000+) with focus on discovery, in the Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Greater Maryland regions to support KSAS Dean’s funding priorities.

• Identify and evaluate giving potential of leadership annual, major, and planned gift prospects through personal visits and engagement in the philanthropic priorities that advance and serve the School’s mission. Effectively plan and execute gift strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward.

• Conduct a minimum of 12-15 prospect and discovery visits per month to meet a goal of 150 visits per year. Schedule and arrange on-site and off-site meetings, visits, etc., with prospects; coordinate the participation of other KSAS representatives.

• Execute a development plan to research and identify new prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors.

• Collaborate with research and prospect management to conduct data analysis of prospects. Conducts own prospect research to identify new prospects, as well as capacity and inclination levels of alumni in the Baltimore, D.C., and Greater Maryland regions.

• Provide stewardship reports to donors on behalf of KSAS and other university officials as needed.

• Prepare major gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation and presentation materials for significant donors.

  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives in areas across the institution.
  • Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to ensure event attendance in assigned territory, as well as recruit and support key volunteers who could assist in the School’s advancement efforts (i.e. mentoring, panel presentation, lectures, etc…). Attend events when needed.
  • Serve as liaison with selected academic departments, centers and programs. Work with the chair or director to determine fundraising opportunities for the department, center, or program. Develop excellent relations with faculty leaders and department chairs in support of KSAS priorities.
  • Similar to above, serve as liaison for Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) faculty and build a strategy for engaging and soliciting AAP alumni.
  • Serve as an integral part of the School of Arts and Sciences team with the Associate Dean, Senior Director of Development, and others; participate in divisional development meetings and retreats.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Two years related experience.

  • Comfort working in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently; ability to work as part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, demonstrated effective writing skills.
  • Transferable skills may be considered in lieu of direct fundraising experience.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, and fast-paced organization.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and the ability to learn new software.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel.
  • Must be able to work on-campus at least three days per week and remotely, effectively balancing the time.

Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
