The Neuroscience Department seeks aResearch Specialist who will be expected to be proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques that will allow them to work in both an independent manner as well as part of a collaborative team within the laboratory. The position will also assist with coordinating laboratory responsibilities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The employee will be a research specialist in the Blackshaw lab, working with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in analyzing genes that regulate retinal and hypothalamic development and regeneration using single cell multiomic profiling and spatial transcriptomic analysis.
  • Techniques used will include:
    • scRNA-Seq
    • scATAC-Seq
    • Single-molecule in situ hybridization
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • Analysis of mutant mice
    • Cell culture
  • Perform routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. The work requires use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Will follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include:
    • Tissue culture
    • Cell separation methods
    • May utilize in vivo models in experiments.
    • Electrophoretic separations
    • Assays
    • Molecular biology
    • In situ hybridization
    • And/or other specialized histology and biological science techniques
  • Will monitor inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, neuroscience or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing related techniques.
  • Master's degree with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in molecular biology, immunohistochemistry/in situ hybridization or related histological techniques, and/or cell culture.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
