  • General summary/purpose: Reporting to the Senior Director of Development in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) Office of External Affairs, the Director of Donor Relations will be responsible for development and oversight of donor relations strategy for the Krieger School, including determining best practices and processes. They will also manage and execute stewardship for all graduate and faculty level gifts. This position will manage an Associate Director of Donor Relations and Special Projects, the Assistant Director of Donor Relations and a Donor Relations Coordinator. The Director of Donor Relations will be skilled in managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously and effectively in a complex and fast-paced environment.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Donor Relations Strategy and Direction:

  • Responsible for development and oversight of donor relations strategy for the Krieger School, including determining best practices and processes.
  • Works directly with frontline fundraisers to implement proactive, strategic stewardship plans for principal and major gift donors and prospects. Requires familiarization with gift officer portfolios and work plans.
  • Maintains a portfolio of personalized stewardship cases, where the donors or stewards are no longer major gift prospects and who have supported graduate, faculty or department specific funds, as well as those who have made unrestricted gifts to the Krieger School.
  • Collaborates with faculty and students who are promoted through stewardship initiatives (such as Thank View campaigns, annual giving stewardship or appeals, DAR and/or KSAS communications).
  • Maintains a strong knowledge of news and other “happenings” at the Krieger School in order to be able to strategically share information with donors and prospects.
  • Liaises with the DAR Communications team to develop and promote relevant and strategic content.
  • Works closely with colleagues across DAR, specifically Office of Stewardship and Donor Engagement (SDE), to ensure KSAS is following and contributing to university policies and procedures and are being collaborative partners in donor relations strategies.
  • Works closely with the Administrative Manager, Dean’s Office, and departments to ensure endowed and current-use funds are being administered according to donor intent and fund designation.
  • Attends regular management team and leadership meetings.
  • Advises on gift acceptance and gift agreement language as needed

Stewardship of graduate, faculty and other KSAS specific funds:

  • Responsible for stewardship of graduate, faculty, and other KSAS specific funds, including:
  • Professorships
  • Graduate fellowships and post-docs
  • Graduate Annual Fund
  • Graduate awards
  • Lectureships
  • Faculty Awards
  • Liaises directly with KSAS department administrators (and chairs, as necessary) to collect annual recipient and endowment information.
  • Liaises with the KSAS Dean’s Office to ensure proper use of endowments.
  • Works with gift officers as needed to report on and/or provide information on department specific funding for stewardship purposes.
  • Acknowledgements:

      Oversees and manages the acknowledgement process
    • Reviews and edits gift log and acknowledgement letters from admins/MGOs.
    • Develop and implement revised acknowledgement process in conjunction with new university policy and process.
    • Works with KSAS Communications as needed to keep template letters updated on an annual basis.

    Strategic Donor Relations Project Initiatives:

    • Creation of an annual fellowship stewardship program that includes an annual fellowship stewardship event.
    • Assist with data analysis and materials for solicitation and stewardship of graduate and post-graduate alumni, including AAP and MLA.
    • Develop a stewardship plan for departments that the Dean considers high priority.
    • Consistent review of all personalized stewardship donors, especially those in the dormant/permanent category to determine need for continue annual stewardship.
    • Oversight and implementation of foreseeable projects for the donor relations team such as the endowment reporting process, CRM (JHAS) system, and campaign stewardship.

    Management Responsibilities:

    • Manage the Associate Director of Donor Relations and Special Projects
    • Provide guidance and direction on the creation, development, implementation, and management of high-level stewardship programming for key principal level donors.
  • Manage the Assistant Director of Donor Relations
  • Provide guidance and direction on development of revised processes for scholarship and undergraduate awards stewardship.
  • Directs ADDR on stewardship of new Homewood Schools Initiatives.
  • Manage the Donor Relations Coordinator
  • Provide guidance to Coordinator to provide administrative support to the Donor Relations Team, as well as implementation of certain processes (such as mailings, personalized stewardship, and reporting).
  • Organize annual strategic planning retreat with Donor Relations team.
  • Minimum qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Five years of professional related experience – experience should be in fundraising, donor relations/stewardship, volunteer engagement, or other relevant field

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Experience working at an institution of higher education
    • Management experience

    Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills, in addition to the ability to deal effectively with a broad spectrum of professionals
    • Candidate should be a confident self-starter with the ability to create strategies to steward top-donors.
    • Must be familiar with budget and endowment processes within non-profit organizations.
    • Ability to interact and develop strong working relationships with high-level administrators and faculty members throughout the institution.
    • Demonstrate sound judgement in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling confidential and sensitive material.
    • Must be able to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
    • Ability to be flexible and composed in rapidly changing situations and to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to perform within time constraints with a high degree of accuracy, effectiveness, and diplomacy.
    • Must possess exceptional organizational skills with a high-functioning attention to detail.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and the ability to influence and work effectively with a wide range of people at different levels within the organizations (DAR colleagues, faculty, high-level donors and trustees, etc.). This includes the ability to proof-read, edit and craft original, high-level correspondence and reports.
    • Proficient in MS Office and database applications, with the ability to use database for research and to run reports.
    • Must live within commuting distance to the Homewood campus in Baltimore and able to work on-campus 3+ days per week and remotely, effectively balancing the time.
