Nutrition Science Tenure/Tenure-Track: Full Professor/Associate-Assistant Professor

The Indiana University School of Public Health‐Bloomington (SPH‐B) invites applications to join the faculty of the Department of Applied Health Science. This is an open-rank tenure/tenure-track search, and applicants at all levels (full, associate, or assistant professor) are welcome. Individuals are sought who will contribute toward academic excellence in research and teaching in support of our mission of preventing disease and promoting the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Located on the flagship campus of the Indiana University system, SPH-B has over 200 faculty members in five departments. Indiana University is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and boasts numerous resources available to SPH-B faculty, including support for grant-writing and teaching, biostatistical consulting, and laboratory facilities. This 10‐month appointment would ideally start on August 1, 2022, although an earlier or later hire date is possible. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will contribute to the department’s vision for research, teaching, and service. Areas of special interest include nutrition, human nutrition, nutritional physiology, and public health nutrition. However, qualified applicants with demonstrated excellence in research and/or teaching in any topic related to nutrition and dietetics will be considered. It is expected that the applicant will be able to build a program of extramurally funded research while contributing to teaching of undergraduate and graduate students. In fact, the successful candidate will lead the development of a new PhD degree program in Nutrition. The successful candidate is also expected to build effective collaborations with other faculty members in the department, school, and university.

Qualifications:  Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in nutrition, human nutrition, nutritional physiology, public health nutrition, or a closely related field, ideally from an accredited school of public health or related accredited educational institution. Candidates must have teaching experience at the graduate or professional level. Good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty is required. Leadership skills and vision for enhancing the academic components of a multi-disciplinary department are essential. Candidates for tenure-track associate and full professor positions must also demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a senior career level, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, and a positive team spirit. Strong preference for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN certification) and willingness to obtain an Indiana dietetics license within 6 months of being hired.

Resources:  The Department of Applied Health Science currently has 130 faculty members and staff combined, with 54 voting members of the faculty and 37 Adjunct faculty members. It offers a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science degree, with five areas of focus: Dietetics (ACEND accredited), Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition Science, Safety, and Youth Development. The Department of Applied Health Science also offers a Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree in Community Health, Master of Public Health and Master of Science degrees, and a doctoral degree in Health Behavior. A new PhD degree program in Nutrition is currently being conceptualized.

The Department of Applied Health Science unites a multidisciplinary faculty with expertise in nutrition and dietetics, social and behavioral science, opioids, addictions, and substance use prevention, sexual and reproductive health, human development and family studies, safety, and maternal and child health, all pursuing the common goal of preventing disease and promoting the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. The Department of Applied Health Science received more than $12.8 million in external awards in FY2020.
