THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English offers its diverse students courses in literature, creative writing, linguistics, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters understanding and appreciation of U. S. and global literature in English, with emphasis on works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women; the history, structure, and socio-cultural aspects of the English language; the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. Our general education offerings focus on themes of diversity, social justice, and environmental justice in literature, creative writing, and composition. In online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses, faculty use innovative pedagogy to help students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers and engagement in civic life. Our 9 full-time and 25 part-time faculty are dedicated teachers, engaged scholars, acclaimed writers, and social activists in our communities. Our students take part in student literary magazines, visiting writers’ series, and departmental literary contests.

The teaching load for tenure-track faculty in their first and second years of service is nine units per semester as specified in the collective bargaining agreement. After the second year of service, English faculty typically teach twelve units (three courses) per semester. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in creative writing and literature (including poetry and poetics) as well as work with other creative writing faculty to supervise the department’s co-curricular activities. The latter include the English Department's student literary magazine Occam’s Razor, Visiting Writers’ series, and literary contests. We are particularly interested in candidates who value engagement with issues of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality. All members of the department are expected to teach composition and general education. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly or creative work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Either rank will require time to tenure. Salary and time to tenure are dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2022

QUALIFICATIONS: Required qualifications included earned MFA or PhD in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Poetry and Poetics at time of appointment; a significant record of recent publications in nationally recognized magazines/journals; a book published or under contract with a nationally recognized press; and experience or interest in coordinating co-curricular activities (i.e., student literary magazines, visiting writers’ series, literary contests). The ideal candidate will demonstrate awareness of innovative pedagogy around issues of diversity and social justice, adaptive and inclusive teaching practices, experience in advising and teaching students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Secondary emphasis in one or more of the following areas is preferred but not required: Queer Poetics, Ethnic Literature, Performance Studies and/or Spoken Word, Digital Humanities, Bilingual/Multilingual Poetics, Eco-Poetry, Decolonialism.
