The Johns Hopkins Center for Interdisciplinary Sleep Research and Education (CISRE) provides sleep research services to Johns Hopkins researchers, outside investigators, and commercial entities. CISRE is seeking a registeredPolysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) who can perform sleep studies, data collection, and study scoring in a research setting. Research sleep studies usually take place in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Clinical Research Unit (CRU, 301 Mason Lord Boulevard). Studies are usually low volume (usually 1:1 or 1:2 technician: patient ratio) but may involve more detailed procedures than in a clinical sleep laboratory.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Experience and Competency in Performing Sleep-related Testing Including:

  • Standard Clinical Polysomnography
  • Modified research polysomnography which may include sleep deprivation/fragmentation
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) titration studies
  • Use of transcutaneous CO2 and end-tidal CO2 monitoring (can be trained to do this)
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (M.S.L.T.) testing
  • Dim light melatonin saliva collection (can be trained to do this)
  • Ability to monitor digital data collection throughout the night for quality (replace malfunctioning leads), record observations (i.e. body position, snoring)
  • Monitor patient safety and recognize danger during a study (e.g. seizures, apnea, arrhythmias)
  • Home sleep testing set-up, instruction, and download
  • Maintenance of study hardware and inventory

Ability to have Professional Interactions with Research Participants:

  • Greet and introduce patient to sleep laboratory and test procedure
  • Prepare patients for testing by applying sensors to monitor physiological parameters during sleep
  • Communicate with research subjects via intercoms

Data Analysis and Tracking:

  • Perform visual sleep stage scoring (stages W,1,2,3,4, REM) in accordance with American Academy of Sleep medicine standards
  • Perform respiratory scoring according to AASM or Medicare criteria
  • Perform limb movement scoring according to AASM criteria
  • Generate technical reports from sleep studies
  • Upload studies to relevant servers and maintain a research database

Scope of Responsibility:

  • The RPSGT should have competency in the performance and interpretation of sleep studies. Since this is a research position, the RPSGT should be familiar with the research protocol and ensure that data is collected in accordance to the study design.
  • The RPSGT should be flexible to adapt to the research needs of the studies, and to the clinical safety and preferences of the research participants.
  • The candidate will be expected to work overnight shifts in the CRU and be available to sleep study scoring (which can take place remotely).

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two years as a polysomnographic technologist preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Has professional communication exchanges with research subjects and clinical researchers, as well as other research staff.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Must be certified in CPR by American Red Cross.
  • Must be licensed to practice Polysomnography in the State of Maryland by the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
