Job Summary

Facilities Management welcomes applications for a Structural Trades I! This position functions as an individual contributor in the Structural Trades Shop performing the maintenance, installation, fabrication, inspection, and preventive maintenance of the structural aspects of the University's buildings. As an essential services employee, the position is responsible to respond to other duties as assigned on an as-needed basis, including alternative work schedules.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Structural Component Installation, Maintenance, and Repairs

1. Structural component installation, maintenance, and repairs: This position performs the installation, maintenance, and repair of structural attributes within the Campus buildings. This function includes assisting journey painters with various aspects of painting work, installing new ceiling tiles and grid systems, replacing existing ceiling tiles, repairing/replacing existing floor tiles, installing new floor tiles within entire rooms, installing cove base, repairing fixed seating in classrooms, repairing small areas of carpet, installing whiteboards, hanging picture frames, repairing windows, replacing window glass, adjusting doors and installing/repairing restroom partitions. This position may also be required to assist with interior finishing and painting of walls on an as-needed basis.

2. Small construction projects and fabrication support: The position assists the STC II positions in the Structural Trades Shop to complete small construction projects and fabrication projects. In support of small construction projects, duties may include assisting with the removal of existing materials, framing new walls, hanging drywall, installing doors and windows, installing ceiling materials, installing flooring materials, and installing interior trim, and painting. In support of fabrication projects, this position may assist the STC II positions to cut, sand, assemble, move and install shelves, cabinets, and other casework.

3. Sheet metal and welding - fabrication and repair: The position assists the PMT II position in the Structural Trades Shop who is responsible for the fabrication and repair of metal structures and components. These duties may include assisting the PMT II positions to repair handrails, install handrails, repair ductwork, cut, drill, and grind metal components, assemble metal fabrication projects, remove existing metal components, and provide general assistance as needed.

4. Asbestos abatement and lead-based paint awareness: This position is required to maintain certification as a “16-hour asbestos abatement certified employee”. Within this function, this position is responsible to remove, drill, scrape, clean and generally work with materials that may contain asbestos. Window putty, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and walls may contain some level of asbestos. Additionally, this position is required to attend annual training for lead-based paint awareness and stabilization processes.

5. Paperwork, scheduling, and other duties as assigned: The position is responsible for completing material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure any material needed to support the position's workload. The position is limited to a $1,000 per event purchase at the FM Construction Stores without the approval of their supervisor. The position is provided 15 minutes in the beginning and/or end of each day to complete their timecard, close out work orders, and schedule their work for the following day. Timecards are required to be completed daily, when closing work orders the position is required to include closing comments and ensure any repair work orders are created. To complete the duties within this PDQ the position will be required to drive a State vehicle and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license.

6. Safety: Actively participates in safety meetings. Follows all safety policies, procedures, and guidelines, as well as adheres to Standing Operating Procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participates and completes all safety training. Reports potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations to the supervisor in a timely manner.

I&S will be hosting a Hiring Open House from 3:00 – 6:00 pm on Tuesday, September 28th at the Research Laboratory 2 building on CU Boulder’s East Campus . What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $39,192 - $41,922.

What We Require

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades (building maintenance trades including carpentry, electrical or painting maintenance, or locksmithing).
  • Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher-level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school appropriate to the work assignment may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be a current Colorado resident.
