The University of Otago invites applications for the position of Dean, Faculty of Dentistry.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for a widely respected senior academic to lead one of the leading dental schools in the world.

The University of Otago is one of New Zealand's largest and most research-intensive universities. Founded in 1907, the Faculty of Dentistry is based at the University's main campus in Dunedin with clinics in Auckland and South Dunedin and is the only dental school in New Zealand. It is proud of its international reputation for research, clinical, and academic excellence. The 2020 QS World University Subject Rankings list the Dental School as among the top 33 in the world.

We are committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations and mātauraka Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution. Our relationship with Ngāi Tahu as mana whenua within their takiwā of Te Waipounamu and, through this, as the University's principal Treaty partner is especially important.

The role

It is expected that appointment will be made at the level of professor. The successful applicant will be a widely respected senior academic in a relevant discipline.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing leadership and advocacy for the Faculty within the University and in the wider community.
  • Executive responsibility for financial, academic and administrative matters of the Faculty, reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  • The Dean will be expected to remain research active.
  • Promoting the School's efforts to understand and realise the letter and the spirit of the University's Māori Strategic Framework, and te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The Dean will be supported through an extremely collegial academic environment, an active and dynamic research culture, and through efficient professional services across the University. The University is firmly committed to growing the Faculty with recent investment in a new state-of-the-art building and facilities, and ongoing plans for increased student enrolment.

Skills and experience

Applicants will have a distinguished and sustained record of teaching, research and scholarship and have demonstrated strong academic management and leadership skills. A strong commitment to, and international knowledge of, dental education together with a willingness to work with relevant professional bodies is essential.
