The Department of Ophthalmology seeks aLaboratory Manager for the Kashani Lab who will be responsible for supporting high-level research functions (drafting and editing manuscripts/grants) and managing all lab members, lab spaces and equipment. This position will work in collaboration with individuals in the lab and serve to supervise and support operations including: daily laboratory operations such as supporting all administrative tasks for the principal investigator, managing all supplies and materials, reviewing inventory and preventative maintenance of all equipment and up to date safety and protocol procedures. This individual will help incorporate new technologies into the laboratory, including the coordination of facilities modification and installation, oversight of installation process, attend training for the operation and maintenance of new instrumentation, and training of other lab personnel in the operation and data acquisition associated with the new technology. They will enable advances in research by coordinating technical expertise and training to undergraduates, graduate students and visiting scientists. The position requires a highly collaborative and team work oriented person who can easily work with other research coordinators, research fellows, and ophthalmic technicians as they will serve as supervisor to 5+ staff positions in research related rolers. The position will also serve to support manuscript preparation and submission, grant preparation and submission as well as some aspects of grants management.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Administrative:

  • Drafting, reviewing, editing, formatting and submitting documents (including grants, manuscripts and study protocols)
  • Coordinating meetings with all lab members and collaborators
  • Maintain research group logs and protocols
  • Prepares, edits and manages powerpoint presentations
  • Managing all day-to-day administrative tasks with principal investigator
  • Performs data entry for research projects

Procurement:

  • All procurement, including supplies, materials, and services, including ordering through SAP, Core Store, Supply Store and outside company orders with a pcard
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation of procurement cards
  • Procurement for all major equipment purchases for the Center
  • Communicates with sales representatives for negotiation of major purchases of very costly and state of the art equipment
  • Maintains up to date records for all major equipment for the Center and annually negotiates with companies for Service Contracts and makes sure the equipment has been serviced
  • Reviews inventory before monthly supply order
  • Also troubleshoots any problems with all purchases, equipment and supplies

Training:

  • Conducts ongoing training and troubleshoots problems within the research group
  • Works directly with the Principle Investigators to ensure ideal working conditions for all members of the laboratory
  • Supervise all lab safety inspections including semiannual lab cleanups and coordinates annual safety class for new students
  • Instruct students in protocol compliance and preparation in support of performance of in vivo experiments
  • Creates and implements laboratory standard operating procedures

Research:

  • Able and willing to learn relevant research methods for maintaining lab projects
  • Familiarity with literature search in the biomedical sciences (e.g. PubMed)
  • Helps prepare, edit and submit research protocols
  • Can perform basic statistical tests on Excel

Time Commitment:

  • It is anticipated that at least 75% of the work for this position will require the physical presence of the applicant at the Johns Hopkins Hospital East Baltimore Campus.
  • Remote work from home is possible but will be determined on project-by-project basis with principal investigator. Flexible work hours will be necessary for scheduling and participation in teleconference calls with collaborators outside the Eastern Time Zone.
  • Overtime and flexible daily scheduling of work hours throughout the week and on rare weekends will be necessary as required by project deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Related Master's preferred.
  • 5 years related experience.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or lead responsibilities.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in biological, medical or paramedical fields.
  • Degrees is project management or more extensive experience may substitute.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • This position requires an excellent communicator who can troubleshoot complex, multifactorial problems in a dynamic and rapidly changing research setting.
  • Experience or degrees in complex project management and conflict resolution will be viewed favorably.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Experience with accounting and proficiency with Excel and RedCap are considered favorably.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Starting Salary Range: $52,495 - $72,210 annually (commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Mon-Fri 9-5 or 8-4 or as needed to manage collaborations with teams outside the Eastern Time Zone.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
