Johns Hopkins IT Department seeks a Multimedia Systems Specialist as the demand for classroom technologies and conferencing increases, the enhancement of teaching with the integration of technology tools, and the expanded use of live streaming and video capture at the Peabody Institute, this shows there is a clear need for multimedia technology expertise. The Multimedia Systems Specialist works as part of a team of AV professionals to support classroom and conference room technology system development, maintenance, and support for the entire Peabody Institute.

The Multimedia Systems Specialist will collaborate closely with other departments on special projects such as meeting conferencing, live streaming events, and event support as it relates to classroom, conference room, and event space technology. The Specialist will also collaborate closely with multi-department live event production teams in various capacities related to multimedia systems and support.

Work Environment:

The person filling this position will serve the entire Peabody Institute; The Peabody Institute consists of the Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University's school of music, boasting a preeminent faculty, and a nurturing, collaborative learning environment, and the Peabody Preparatory, Baltimore's premier community school for the performing arts, offering instruction in music and dance for children and adults. Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate and practice excellent customer service skills above all else.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the production and editing of video and other multimedia assets, for livestreaming, promotional, course materials, and archival purposes.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of multimedia technology and systems in existing and proposed instructional spaces.
  • Collaborate on the design, implementation, and maintenance of multimedia technology and systems in performance halls. Collaborate with outside vendors, recording arts, and concert office.
  • Maintain service plans for systems and service agreements with the vendors.
  • Document all components, operations, and processes of existing systems and provides guidance to other staff.
  • Regular performance of preventative maintenance and up-keep of portable production equipment, video-conferencing systems, classroom AV equipment, and control room.
  • Provide operation and maintenance guidance to other staff. May design, develop and implement instructional materials as needed, e.g., websites, online courses, etc.
  • Research, analyze, and recommend solutions among fiber optic, Network, and RGBHV, SDI or other A/V digital delivery options. Provide budget and cost estimates.
  • Teach, instruct, and support faculty, staff, and students on the use of multimedia equipment.
  • Perform duties of a Multimedia Technician as needed.
  • Provide responsive support as needed for faculty members and staff using instructional and conferencing spaces. Manage student staff to help with 1st-tier support.
  • Design and update classroom and event space training materials as needed and provide one-on-one or group follow-up support to faculty and staff using the systems.
  • Work in collaboration with the rest of the IT staff and provide periodic reports to various Peabody Institute committees regarding multimedia systems.
  • Collaborate with and support other IT staff on the implementation of comprehensive video capture and streaming solutions across the institution.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Three years in-depth experience in multimedia, distribution systems, video conferencing, distance learning, electronic security, web-based applications, networks, principles of Internet, web casting and streaming media. (Additional related education may substitute for experience; additional related experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by JHU equivalency)

  • Excellent customer service skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with faculty, students, staff, and vendors.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to deal with multiple constituencies.
  • Willingness, interest, and ability to evaluate and learn new multimedia systems and other educational technologies.
  • Well-developed understanding of Webcam technology, live streaming via services such as U-Stream, servers, databases, and streaming audio/video.
  • Familiarity with graphic design elements, working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good problem solver who takes initiative and can work independently. Must have ability to acquire, synthesize and share expert professional knowledge of current and emerging multimedia technologies with other members of the IT team.

  • Team player with ability to communicate and collaborate with multiple departments within Peabody and with the JHU multimedia community.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
