The Department of Genetic Medicine seeks a Research Technologist who, under the supervision of a faculty investigator, is responsible for independently performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue or cultured cell lines. Work requires basic and advanced use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes appropriate technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include:
    • Tissue culture
    • Cell separation methods
    • Electrophoretic separations
    • Assays
    • Basic and advanced molecular biology
    • And other specialized histology and biological science techniques
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments.
  • Will assist other lab members in maintaining their mouse colonies and in performing their experiments, including breeding, genotyping and administering experimental medications and participating in imaging studies.
  • Will maintain mouse lines not currently used by other lab members.
  • Extracts DNA and performs molecular tests such as genotyping and DNA sequencing.
  • Analyzes genotyping and sequencing results.
  • Maintain meticulous records of mouse colony management.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Previous mouse work highly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
  • Able to safely operate scientific laboratory equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
  • Ability to move about workspace.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
