We are seeking a highly motivated motivated postdoctoral trainee to work in Dr. Cieslik’s laboratory to study changes in the extracellular matrix and inflammation in the aging heart. In our previous work, we demonstrated a therapeutic response to Glycine (Gly) and N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) dietary supplementation (GlyNAC) in old male mice. The old mice demonstrated a striking improvement in diastolic function, left atrial volume, and left ventricular diastolic pressure with GlyNAC dietary supplementation that was not seen with NAC alone. GlyNAC improved mitochondrial function and carbohydrate metabolism. However, the most striking change was a decrease in inflammatory mediators (IL-6), an increase in anti-inflammatory IL-10, and reduced leukocyte infiltration into the heart. Further investigation of the mechanism by which GlyNAC prevents and reverses diastolic dysfunction in old male and female mice will be the focus of postdoctoral trainee research.
