Job Description

The Physics Department at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate or Senior Research Associate position (commensurate with experience) in quantum information theory. The research involves construction and analysis of quantum computing algorithms. Example areas of interest include measurement-based quantum computation, quantum simulation, and quantum many-body physics. Expertise in computational methods is highly desirable, but it is not a prerequisite. The position includes opportunities for travel both to present at conferences and to collaborate with other groups. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics or a related field.

This research will be conducted with Prof. Vito Scarola (scarola@vt.edu) and his research group at Virginia Tech (scarola.phys.vt.edu). The primary duties of the position will consist of research in the overlapping areas of quantum information theory and condensed matter, writing peer-reviewed publications, and presenting research results to a wider research community both regionally and internationally. The work will also require close collaboration and interaction with students, postdocs, and faculty members at Virginia Tech, as well as an international set of collaborators.

At the research associate level, this position will also entail collaboration with, as well as mentoring and supervision of junior researchers. Rank of position will be determined by qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

Postdoctoral associate applicants must hold a Ph.D. in either Quantum Information Science, Theoretical Condensed Matter, AMO Physics or a closely related field. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.

Senior research associate applicants must have a Ph.D. in either Quantum Information Science, Theoretical Condensed Matter, AMO Physics or a closely related field. Prior postdoctoral experience. A strong background in Quantum Mechanics and programming skills are necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of fundamental concepts of quantum information and quantum many-body theory.
