Biomedical Research Model Services (BRMS) is based in the School of
Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. BRMS provides animal husbandry, breeding,
research services, and operational support to the UW-Madison animal
use researchers. BRMS is seeking an Animal Research Technician to
join their team. Duties include, but are not limited to, feeding
and watering animals, providing a variety of technical support for
complex animal operations, monitoring animal room environments,
cleaning primary and secondary enclosures, receiving animals,
transporting animals, restraining and handling animals, monitoring
animal health, reporting sick and injured animals, general facility
maintenance and housekeeping, and cage wash operations. Animal
Research Technician-Entry/Objective interacts with investigators,
UW and veterinary staff, and emergency personnel as required and
communicate with those people effectively via phone, email, and in
person. They also perform all duties in assigned work unit per
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Policies & Procedures
for all species in the work unit. This is an entry or objective
level technical position performing specialized animal husbandry
performed under the general supervision of the area Laboratory

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
-Physical ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist and push
carts, bedding, feed bags and equipment up to 50 lbs.
-Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
-Proficient computer skills, emailing, website experience, and
experience using Microsoft Excel and Word.
-At least 1 year of animal care experience
-Knowledge of acceptable animal husbandry procedures.
-Knowledge of sterile and aseptic cage changing techniques.
-Familiarity with or ability to learn University requirement
concerning Responsible Use and Care of Animals in Research and
Training and the Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory
-Knowledge of animal health records maintenance and ability to
perform animal health checks.
-Planning, organizational and communication skills.
-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
-Ability to work effectively as a team member
License or Certificate:
American Association for Laboratory Animals Science (AALAS)
Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) or
Laboratory Animals Technologist (ALAT) level preferred.
Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW
Risk Management in order to operate University vehicles.
