The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology seeks aResearch Specialist II who has done proficient research and/or clinical laboratory specialist with a firm understanding of molecular and cellular techniques and a solid foundation in the stem cell biology and hematopoiesis which are gained from professional experience. Under minimal supervision, performs stem cell research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols. The Research Specialist II participates in the design of experiments and analyzes data, works independently and manages daily research projects. This individual will assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, data collection/maintenance, and organization of the laboratory. They will run lab tests and complete measurements as assigned as well as identify and resolve problems. They will use analytical and decision-making skills to implement assigned projects.Familiar with flow cytometry technology, the Research Specialist will provide technical supporting and training new users to use flow analyzers, including BD LSR II and BD FACSCalibur. Under supervision of flow cytometry core manger to run cell sorting on BD FACS Aria II.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs clinical and/or research lab tests and experiments. Optimize procedures and protocols, utilize appropriate technique to develop, perform and analyze laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include:
    • Stem cell culture, differentiation and results analysis.
  • Maintenance and simple troubleshooting of flow cytometry analyzers. Training new users to use flow analyzers, including BD LSR II and BD FACSCalibur. Help flow cytometry core manger to run cell sorting on BD FACS Aria II.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
  • Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows.
  • May be responsible for routine operational activities such as; ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc. Preventative maintenance of equipment. Significant independent performance will be required, particularly after the first few weeks.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required and a minimum of two years related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques is preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Able to efficiently use Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
  • Ability to learn new computer skills and applications quickly including how to install software, firmware, and manipulate hardware/peripherals
  • Must be able to efficiently and proactively communicate with supervisors and coworkers, manipulate small and large test tubes, flasks and pipettes, move some moderately-large equipment and boxes, type quickly, write nimbly and legibly, see very well at a short distance, communicate clearly by phone, move within the building and around campus, and work at the bench (and sometimes at a microscope with micromanipulator, etc.) for extended periods.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
