Exemption Status: Exempt

Status: Full-Time

Responsible for the administration of efficient and economical maintenance and repair of University buildings, grounds, and equipment including the preparation of specifications for maintenance projects and the operation of energy control and HVAC systems.

Duties:

  • Responsible for overall planning and allocation of job assignments and expectations for plant operations of all electrical and mechanical systems, major repairs and renovations, utility systems, and life/safety systems
  • Responsible for providing leadership to the buildings and grounds, custodial, and mechanical staff, including oversight of employment, supervision, and performance management processes of personnel assigned to the department
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of the three department managers and the mechanics
  • Responsible for communication and coordination of team efforts among department management staff
  • Oversee work of outside contractors as necessary
  • Responsible for the preparation and management of the department's operating and University capital budgets with assistance from each department manager
  • Responsible for addressing environmental issues/concerns and maintaining procedures and records to meet state and federal regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Committee assignments as appointed by the President including staff responsibilities to Board of Trustee Committees as appropriate
  • Contributes to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the department; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.


Primary Contacts: Buildings & Grounds staff (which includes mechanics, groundskeepers, and custodians), Grounds manager, Custodial/ Administrative Manager, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Public Safety, vendors, contractors, University faculty and staff, Board members, students, and other members of the University community

Supervision Exercised: Buildings & Grounds Staff and direction for outside vendors and contractors

Supervision Received: Works under general direction toward broadly defined objectives; refers specific problems to the Chief Financial Officer when clarification or interpretation of organizational policies is involved.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering, building construction, or a related field; commensurate experience accepted in lieu of degree

Experience: Extensive experience in large scale building operation and maintenance work including building systems and significant supervisory experience of staff with diverse responsibilities. A demonstrated ability and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Specialized Training: Knowledge of large scale buildings and grounds maintenance practices; knowledge of the work of skilled trades; ability to plan for and supervise the University staff and outside contractors; ability to read plans and prepare specifications; valid driver's license required.

Work Environment, Physical Demands:

  • 24-hour call; supervision of first and third shift employees; frequent physical effort involving handling or lifting heavy weights; exposure to extreme weather conditions; computer data input; multiple concurrent tasks with constant service interruptions; customer contact; confidentiality; detailed work; valid driver’s license and ability to operate large machinery
