Master’s Degree in Student Services, Higher Education Administration, or related field. Five years experience in a professional capacity. Experience with a residence life program is desirable. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education. Nature & Purpose of Position
Plans, organizes, directs, and controls daily operations and personnel within the Hall Staff and Student Development area of the department. Primary Responsibilities
Supervises and coordinates residence hall staff and student development areas to include management tasks, planning, organizing, staffing, and leading. Interprets policies and supervises enforcement of policies to include handling professional level student disciplinary situations and serving as disciplinary appeals officer. Directly responsible for all aspects of academic initiatives within the residence halls to include living and learning communities and faculty-in-residence programs, and serves as a liaison to faculty and others in Academic Affairs. Interviews, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates professional and support personnel that report directly to the Director. Interviews, hires, and oversees supervision of Association of College and University Housing Officers – International ( ACUHO -I) intern, to include developing internship description to meet Human Resources requirements. Projects and maintains assigned budgets for areas involving residence hall staff and student development programs. Prepares reports, analyses, evaluations, and proposals as required. Responsible for data collection and assessment of residence hall staff, training, programs, and student organizations. Authors and submits articles regarding residence hall staff, student programs, and information updates for publication in Southwest Association of College and University Housing officers ( SWACUHO ) newsletters, ACUHO -I Talking Stick, and Sam Houston State University publications. Provides oversight for: departmental programming efforts to promote student initiatives, growth and development through various leadership opportunities within hall councils, Residence Hall Association ( RHA ) and National Residence Hall Honorary ( NRHH ); department’s Resource and Training Center; and training and development programs for the residence hall staff. Serves on various University committees as invited or directed, specifically including, but not limited to the Convocation Committee. Participation/involvement with regional and national housing organizations is expected. Works directly with students, parents, student groups, organizations, departments, and others as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned. Other Specifications
Must be willing to travel periodically for professional development opportunities and to assist in interviewing personnel at industry conferences. Computer experience necessary. Must possess well developed communicative and interpersonal skills essential to working with individuals or large groups. Working hours may vary as required including occasional evening and weekend work. Responsible for all employee relations within the Hall Staff and Student Development area of the department. Strong leadership skills and the ability to exercise discretion, excellent reasoning and independent judgment, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure, and ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others is required.
