Africana Studies – Gender/Sexuality Studies – Critical Race Theory

Tenured

Carleton College invites applications for a senior (tenured associate or full professor) position in Africana Studies to begin September 1, 2022. Candidates are expected to have the following: (1) A Ph.D. in Africana Studies, or a related field, (2) a record of distinction in teaching, research, and service, and (3) a commitment to theorizing from and/or centering the experience of Black/African descended peoples. We welcome applicants who demonstrate interdisciplinary training at the intersection of Africana studies and: Gender/Sexuality Studies and Critical Race Theory. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and capstone courses in Africana Studies, more specialized courses and seminars in the candidate’s areas of specialization and research, as well as advising student theses and independent research. We encourage developing courses on Black Sexualities, Queer, and Feminist Studies as well as Critical Race Theory. We seek applicants eager to serve as Director of our Africana Studies Program and those who possess substantial leadership qualities for developing the program. We desire candidates who can work to bridge disciplinary divides and expand Africana Studies’ impact at our small liberal arts college.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000.  Located in the historic and thriving town of Northfield, Minnesota, we are forty-five miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, whose greater metro area has a diverse population of three million people and a rich variety of cultural resources. We are a community of scholars committed to the goal of excellence in undergraduate education, in research, and in building a more socially just, diverse, and inclusive society in all of our endeavors. We seek candidates who share these values and commitments.

To apply for this position, candidates should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a course syllabus and an annotated listing of courses you are prepared to teach, graduate transcripts, and a statement of teaching philosophy that addresses our liberal arts environment. In the statement of teaching philosophy, we are particularly interested in hearing about candidates' specific classroom strategies for promoting equity, critically examining histories of oppression, and fostering a respectful classroom environment. Letters of recommendation will be requested for selected candidates following the initial review of materials. These materials should be submitted at careers.carleton.edu. To ensure full consideration, please submit all application materials by October 15, 2021.
