Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences and receiving work lead direction from the Director of Student Success Center, the Academic Advisor will work independently and with a team of advisors under general supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the College of Social Sciences. The Advisor will advise students on academic requirements and procedures, provide support for students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personal problems, connect students to appropriate resources on campus to foster student success, and advocate the needs of individual students and groups of students. Working with the Center team, the advisor participates in assessment processes, provides professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students, and supports College and University initiatives on retention, persistence, and graduation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the College
  • Support students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personal problems
  • Advise students individually and in groups on topics, such as general education requirements, filing petitions, academic and educational planning, graduation procedures, etc.
  • Aid students in improving students’ successful educational strategies such as effective study habits, time management skills, and supportive educational environment development
  • Aid students in accessing resources and services to help with addressing issues and enhancing students' likelihood of success
  • Provide professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students
  • Provide professional academic advisor support for College- and University-wide events and initiatives, including but not limited to orientation, registration, and recruitment events on campus and at area community colleges
  • Attend on campus meetings and events as a representative of the Center
  • Assess program effectiveness and to make data-informed program adjustments in support of the Center’s mission and student success initiatives
  • Contribute data and information in support of the Center’s program assessment efforts
  • Support efforts to maintain student success data elements and metrics
  • Recommend changes in program procedures to improve student success


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to effectively use software applications: Google docs/drive, word processing and spreadsheets, and database management
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to effectively advise students individually and in groups on moderately complex student‑related matters; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly
  • Ability to encourage students to seek out and learn from experiences with different forms of diversity
  • Ability to manage time in order to be most available to clients while maintaining appropriate response time for phone and email messages
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, students and external agencies
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data
  • Ability to plan and conduct workshops, assist with organization of special events or activities, and make effective presentations before groups
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills


Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree related to educational counseling or in a discipline within the social sciences with additional professional training or experience in academic advising
  • Two years of experience providing academic advising to college students
  • Experience with policies, practices, and activities of academic advising
  • Experience developing and providing workshops or other educational experiences
  • Experience collecting and evaluating data
  • Excellent written communication skills




Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,304/month - $4,600/month
Salary Range: $4,304/month - $6,120/month
